darshan wrote about music and the emotional experience dervied from listening
to it. i would have to agree with him completely. i think that a lot of
material, or at least a fair amount, designated as intelligent dance music
is really incapable of moving the listener.
i read a very interesting book about the philosophy of music- it's purpose
and how it interacts with the listener- called MUSIC AND THE MIND by
anthony storr. it was an amazing book which talked about such things as
the origins of music as well as the phisiological phenomena behind the
creation and appreciation of music. he also talked about music being able
to cause a culmination of emotion in a mass quantity of people at once. it is
a really interesting book and i recommend that anyone who wants more insight
into the topic should definitely check it out- especially those who create
music.
i guess my point to to all of this is that i personally find a lot of IDM to
be an exploration of sound without any real attempt to captivate the
listener. an example of such material was the B12 cd. a lot of people have
mentioned that it is simply amazing- and for those of you that agree i would
love to know why... i on the other hand find it to be rather uninteresting
and unmoving. sometimes for me listening to music leads me to introspection,
when i like something i often ask myself why and i begin to think about
many such things and things related to this. i like music which makes me
think and which makes me feel something. sadly, a lot of what is out there,
that which is designed to do that, just doesn't do it for me.
i have rambled enough about this... any thoughts or comments? furthermore,
i would love to know if anyone out there has any recommendations as to
other books on music worth checking out.
