I'd second the Ocean of Sound recommendation, and also say that Simon Reynolds' Energy Flash (Generation Ecstacy in the US) is worth reading for a balancing view - that IDM is an occasionally inspired but frequently insipid footnote to the creative drive of a lot of the rest of the UK dance scene.
I don't agree with everything he says, but I think his viewpoint is very well put forward and very interesting, in a "love it or hate it, at least it makes you think" sort of way. It'll certainly help you to avoid sounding like a fanboy if you're well up on an alternative perspective.
