so even though i still love CDs as an album format, i recognize some things are only available as vinyl or download. given that choice, i'll go for a download. i can always do a compilation or a mix myself later :) so i got myself a beatport account, and have been trawling through looking for stuff. it's a cool interface but of course somewhat time- consuming. so, i'm looking for dubstep recommendations. bear in mind my introduction to dubstep was through burial's first album. since then i've come to like the following artists and tracks: starkey moving ninja hektagon's "strange voices" shackleton "el din" kode 9 "9 samurai" Larvae "Gigan And The Mysterians" i also like meat beat manifesto's take on dubstep on most of their last album. i did NOT get into the bug or DJ distance...i found them both too much like real jamaican dub/reggae and too clean in production. looking forward to your suggestions....artists and/or tracks, especially those i can get on beatport. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Martyn and 2562 are very polished too, although probably a little less than DJ Distance. If you guys got some more suggestions for deep/dark dubstep or cross-genre dubstep/techno keep them coming in this thread i'm very interested. Generally speaking though what Burial did in the first 2 albums was more out of incomptence than sound research, although that doesn't matter because i can totally feel all his songs' mood and love them all (check out also his remixes of Thom York and Wayfaring Stranger up on YouTube). He actually declared that he produced both his albums only with SoundForge so that when he made some mistake, he had to fade it out ;-) Wayfaring Stranger, Burial remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-oDrrtsJgs And It Rained All Night Burial remix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxNROL1BDkM Oh yeah let's not forget Dusk & Blackdown http://www.boomkat.com/item.cfm?id=114915 L. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Surgeon did a (tech) remix of a Scuba tune recently that's really nice. The name of the track won't come to mind.. it's at home. Pretty sure it's on Hotflush? Only released in the last month or two... Vex'd did a remix of a Distance tune called "Fallen" that's one of my favourite tracks at the moment. Came out a while back on Planet Mu's "200" comp. -----Original Message----- From: Lorenzo Bolognini [mailto:lbolognini@gmail.com] Sent: Thursday, December 11, 2008 1:37 AM If you guys got some more suggestions for deep/dark dubstep or cross-genre dubstep/techno keep them coming in this thread i'm very interested. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Cthonic- If you're looking for dubstep, I would say sign up for '14 tracks' from boomkat - http://14tracks.com/ - their picks, while not always dubstep per se, are consistently spot-on, in a decent player format, curated weekly around a loose theme. Really choice. -the good doctor --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i love boomkat for checking things out i can't hear elsewhere. but i'm in the usa, boomkat's prices are in pounds sterling...the exchange rate will kill me. even $1.49 - $1.99 per mp3 irritates me to tell you the truth. i guess because it's not uncompressed and is just this ephemeral file on a drive. sorry, just lapsing into physical format-romanticism there. ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the WebMail system at chthonicstreams.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, they're ace. Also Applepips releases in a similar sort of vein. Skream has some really good techno influenced stuff, and he also has some fairly tedious robo-fart wobble stuff. It's probably worth digging through to find the good stuff, though. Mala is the king - get stuff like Lean Forward, Left Leg Out, Bury Da Bwoy, Anti War Dub for ruff housey vibes with a deep melancholy core. Brilliant. Loefah is deep too, in a heavy, minimal, sloooooowwwww sort of way. And yeah, you've already got some Hyperdub stuff, but pretty much anything on the label or by associated artists is worth checking out - Kode 9 is a genius, Ikonika for 8 bit bleepy madness, Zomby and Rustie and Darkstar, Samiyam and Flying Lotus for wonky hip hop. I'm quite excited about dubstep at the moment - it seems to be rushing in all directions at once at a considerable rate, it's cool... d.
