<12 step> Hi. My name is Kevin and I'm a list newbie. </12 step> I've been listening to electronic music off and on for five years or so, but I've just recently started buying a lot of it. I'm looking for recommendations for "essential" IDM releases in the last couple of years. Stuff that I own and like: Autechre: Incunabula, Amber, Tri Repetae++ (Amber's my fave) Plaid: Not For Threes, Rust Proof Clockwork Aphex Twin: Selected Ambient Works II, Surfing on Sine Waves (as Polygon Window) Mocean Worker: Home Movies from the Brainforest, Mixed Emotional Features Amon Tobin: Supermodified Black Dog: Bytes Orbital: Orbital II, Middle of Nowhere The Orb: The Orb's Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld Boards of Canada: Music Has A Right To Children (this is pretty much welded into my CD player at the moment) Stuff I tried and wasn't crazy about: Squarepusher: Big Loada (most of the tracks didn't seem to go anwhere...) Stuff I've had recommended, but haven't hunted down yet: Two Lone Swordsmen Wagon Christ Funkstorung Mu-ziq Thank you for furthering my music education. The tuition is in the mail. -- Kevin | "If you are not an only son, you can become one Murphy | through hard work and perseverance." | - T.H. <<Stuff I tried and wasn't crazy about: Squarepusher: Big Loada (most of the tracks didn't seem to go anwhere...)>> First a personal note: I'm nuts about Big Loada, or at least the first half of the album. Out of all the albums you've listed (excepting a couple I haven't heard) it's probably my favorite. Yup, even counting BoC. Unlike a lot of the more frenetic IDM, Big Loada is a very accessible album and that's important to me. I've got all sorts of "heady" IDM (a couple Schematic releases come to mind) that's technically superb but just doesn't make the cut in the rocking-out department. I have to say the second track on Big Loada--the ragga jungle rip off--is off the wall. And the first and third tracks (on the Warp version anyway) are good clean drill 'n bass that doesn't get too carried away with fuckery-for-fuckery's-sake. I'd probably agree with you that the last half of the album has a few tracks that drag on a little longer than necessary, but overall I think the album is one of my top three IDM picks. I've got the Warp release with 7 tracks, but if you've got the North American release on Nothing then you get the added bonus of maybe two EPs including the most beautiful drum 'n bass track ever, Port Rhombus. <<Two Lone Swordsmen Wagon Christ Funkstorung Mu-ziq>> I think judging from your other list those are all pretty safe bets... Funkstorung can kind of go both ways. You seem to like the more melodic and chill side of IDM and for that I'd have to say Funkstorung's "Post Art" EP is one of my favorites. But if you're not crazy about Squarepusher you might not be crazy about most of Funkstorung's releases which tend to have a lot of stop-and-start beat juggling where the songs kind of deliberately trip over themselves. People have been knocking u-ziq's "Royal Astronomy" on here but I thought the album was very interesting, again in a melodic (as opposed to technical) kind of way. I'd recommend it, although you gotta be careful with most of Paradinas's stuff. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. I have the Nothing release. Went back and listened to Port Rhombus again - you're right. That's a great song. I don't mind drill-and-bass so much if it's used for surface texture, but when dental-drill skittering has to carry the whole weight of a song, it quickly tires me out. Are there other Squarepusher releases which are more along the lines of Port Rhombus throughout? -- Kevin | "A Kenyan man once said to me, 'You can get used Murphy | to anything when money's involved.' Hi all, I'm a relatively new listener when it comes to whatever this thing is that the term IDM denotes (I know there is controversy over it). If its true that its more of a listening community than a genre (which may or may not be the case), then...umm...what does that community listen to? In other words, I'm asking for a list of say 15 or 20 paradigmatic releases in the last decade or so. I'll be expecting differences of opinion from the many different commentators here, which is all part of the fun anyway (in the end it will just mean more familiarity with what is out there, which is the point). Peace, H. Tayeb

AFAIK it's a bass guitar. One of those higher pitched plucky ones, which he records to a MIDI file which is then used in his tunes. Go Plastic! is one of my Squarepusher favs btw. cheerz

Doesn't it seem like almost ANY idm that was released between 1994 and 1998 is super classic? I mean, think about it.. Cylob AFX Autechre's early albums.. Plug MoM B12 Black Dog u-ziq Jega Bola Funk's Musik aus Strom 12"'s Those were idm's golden years.. almost any record released on Rephlex, Schematic, Chocolate Industries (the came later on..), Warp, Peacefrog, MoWax (remember when they were sorta idm?), or SKAM was going to be spot on. -kiya -----Original Message-----
