..
The Northgate Music Festival College Station,
Texas is an 11 venue event
featuring over 150 bands and estimates 10,000
attendees over a three day
period. The Festival has included a DJ/live PA
stage for at least the past
five years to my knowledge. I am a live PA
performer that was scheduled to
play a live electronic music act Saturday March
27th 2004. On thursday I
was called by the stage manager and informed that
the TABC (Texas Alcholic
Beverage Commission) had called both the venue
and the festival promoter and
discouraged from allowing the DJ stage to take
place. The DJ stage had in
previous years taken place on an outside stage
but was scheduled to be held
inside a restaurant this year. It was suggested
by the stage manager that
the venue be changed back to an outdoor stage and
TABC insisted that the
electronic music stage not take place at all or
face arrest / shutdown of
the entire music festival. No other venue was
given this ultimatum. The DJ
/ live PA stage was the ONLY stage featuring
electronic music. The DJ stage
ran concurrent to the festival for years without
incident.
Of course... they aren't prosecuting anyone. They
are threatening to
prosecute the venue (ie Double Dave's Pizza)
under the rave act should
anyone be arrested for drug dealing - since
Double Dave's doesn't want to be
held accountable they just assume not sponsor the
event. The TABC
effectively bullys the event from taking place...
What can be done if
anything immediately in reaction to this
travesty? The ACLU can take weeks
- even months to get back to individuals on such
matters... I have filed
an incident report with EMDEF though admittedly
my account is second hand.
