Kinda OT, but I was thinking about upcoming live electronic music shows and couldn't help but compare with the Flaming Lips show last week in Montreal. Why can't more live shows be like this one? It must be the best live experience I have seen in my life. I must say that the last time they came to my hometown of Montreal was during the 1994 Lolapalooza tour (forgettable performance). It's a great experience, with strong visuals a la Boards of Canada, dancing fans on stage, equipped with fur costumes and big flashlights, huge balloons flying around, energy-packed Wayne Coyne (singer), that came up with so many things to say and show. Now I think about some shows I have seen in the past, like Clayton behind a small laptop, Vibert in total darkness, and countless other acts that don't give a shit if you're watching or not. I know I can't compare them with the music of the Flips, don't want to start on the same subject again, I guess I was just too excited about their show and had to write about it. poussinfrais -- Sebastien Dalphond R&D-Hybride --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm sure if your average IDM artist had the touring budget of the Flaming Lips, you'd see a lot more elaborate shows. As it is, most of them end up sleeping on people's couches while they drive crappy vehicles across the country (whichever country they happen to be touring in). Only the most popular IDM artists qualify for airfare, let alone hotel accomodations. Which means that making sure you have dancers and visuals and lights and other crazy things on stage takes somewhat of a backseat. derek -- eggytoast.com - eggtastic.com ------ it's in your grocer's freezer --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Agreed, although the Flips had it rough too, for a long time. That didn't stop them from doing all sorts of stuff (surely not for the money), like a boom box concert (where everyone brings a boom box), or the car lot experiment (people listen to some tracks in their car). While this is not something you can earn your money with, it's still fun and unusual. poussinfrais -- Sebastien Dalphond R&D-Hybride

Of course someone with a decent computer and After Effects/Final Cut Pro could set that up. Oh... and don't forget the fake blood. I can verify the Dancing Animal claim. Two of my friends were 'selected'(meaning some a seemingly random person came up to them and asked if they wanted to dance on stage in animal constumes)at the St. Paul, MN show with Beck. One was a Lion, and the other was a Rabbit...I think.
