Leaf Newsletter #65 14 July 2003 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- album: COLLEEN – ‘Everyone Alive Wants Answers’ single: MANITOBA – ‘Hendrix With Ko’ single: MURCOF - ‘Ulysses’ new Leaf merchandise other new releases forthcoming Leaf events worldwide unsubscribe info ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- 1. COLLEEN - ‘Everyone Alive Wants Answers’ CD / BAY 31CD / UPC 0666017058320 / mail order price: 10.00 UKP (+p&p) limited edition LP / BAY 31V / UPC 0666017058313 / mail order price: 9.00 UKP (+p&p) Release date: out now! artist website: coming soon... for mail order, real audio samples and further info, go to: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=3346 Available now! Colleen’s simple but effortlessly charming music is one of magical details - naïve instrumentals filled with warmth, melody and soul, played on a broken music box, a glockenspiel or a guitar, phasing in and out, on the verge of collapse. Above all, this is wonderfully human... Everyone Alive Wants Answers is the haunting work of 26-year-old Parisienne Cecile Schott. Her debut album release, she has previously released a gem of a 7” single (‘Babies’) on the up-and-coming Active Suspension label, which brought her to the attention of The Leaf Label. “Oh, this is good. Really good. Possessing the same ability as Susumu Yokota and Carl Craig to make time seem as though it stands still in their compositions, Cecile constructs almost child-like gossamer threads of melody and fragile ambience... to create something quite beautiful” **** DJ “Another triumphant flowering from the small but very well formed Leaf imprint. Colleen is the alias of Parisienne Cecile Schott and her début LP is a dreamily spooked, beguilingly oddball, twittering delight. With a base of delicate electronica, as embroidered by assorted instruments (some of them broken), it’s by turns eerie, awkward, playful, sweet and sad. Track titles such as ‘Long Live Mice In The Metro’ and ‘In The Train With No Lights’ hint at it’s phantasmagoric charms and suggest a collaboration with animators the Brothers Quay would be made in heaven” Time Out “Colleen’s first collection is a strange and beautiful set of minimalist mood-sketches in which the luscious spiralling interludes of vintage 4AD meet the hypnotic deep feel of latter-day Seefeel. Simultaneously fragile and rough edged, glockenspiel chimes, flutes, spectral harps and broken music boxes drift across swathes of nocturnal waltz and drone. Tape hiss and sound-source crackles are left intact and the mood conjured is both bewitching and sinister, like Broadcast’s retro spook-loops left to mutate on the ether. Alongside Susumu Yokota’s “Sakura”, this is a post-ambient milestone” Careless Talk Costs Lives “Its title and succinct sleevenote dedication to her brother, Frederic (1973-1994), tells you much that you need to know about where Colleen, aka Paris’ Cecille Schott, is pointing on her long play debut. Assembled from insistent loops, fragile, slowly dissolving melodies, swathes of darkness, chinks of light, intermittent spiky bits and a penchant for acoustic instruments like the glockenspiel, this isn’t chill to enliven your barbecue so much as chill to make you look, unashamedly, inwards. It’s frequently beautiful stuff, quietly raging and palpably enticing” Muzik Colleen will be appearing live at events in Europe this summer. MANITOBA – ‘Hendrix With Ko’ Enhanced CD single / DOCK 36CD / UPC 0666017057422 / mail order price: 4.00 UKP (+p&p) 12” single / DOCK 36 / UPC 0666017057460 / mail order price: 4..00 UKP (+p&p) Release date: Monday July 14 2003 artist website: http://www.manitoba.fm for mail order, real audio samples and further info, go to: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=3475 Available now! ‘Hendrix With Ko' is the second single to be taken from Manitoba’s groundbreaking second album, 'Up In Flames', and features vocals by the notoriously reclusive Koushik Ghosh (who’s only release to date has been on Kieran Hebden’s Text Records imprint). Ko’s chops are alternately meshed with an off-centre rock beat, fragmented harp and an infectious electro-melody. On ‘Hendrix With Ko’, as on the rest of 'Up In Flames', Dan Snaith straddles the worlds of cutting-edge electronic music and good ol’ fashioned pop songcraft, with consummate ease. The single marks another high point in an already wild year for Dan, with critical accolades, record sales and tour dates piling up around the globe. 'Up In Flames' was awarded Album Of The Issue in Jockey Slut, Hot Press, DMC Update and Loaded, and the band were recently placed in the NME’s Top 10 live bands in the UK. ‘Hendrix with Ko’ is backed with two previously unreleased gems taken from the same sessions that produced 'Up In Flames'. On CD, the music is complimented by Delicious Nine’s stunning video for previous single ‘Jacknuggeted’. We have limited stocks of the three Manitoba T-shirts at PostEverything, as well as copies of all the Manitoba vinyl and CD releases. Go here for more info: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/artist.php?id=57 Manitoba are playing live at European festivals throughout the summer, with West Coast North American tour to follow in September. MURCOF – 'Ulysses’ 12” single / DOCK 37 / UPC 0666017057569 / mail order price: 4.00 UKP (+p&p) Release date: Monday 28 July 2003 artist website: http://www.murcof.com for mail order, real audio samples and further info, go to: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=3486 Available to order now! Murcof’s first release since 2002’s astonishing Martes album is this epic two track 12” single of all new material. Tijuana, Mexico’s Fernando Corona takes it deeper, more spiritual than before, the music resonating with the ghost of Stanley Kubrick. Both tracks clock in at around 10 minutes but don’t outstay their welcome for a moment. This time out, rather than being composed of samples from contemporary classical music, much of the orchestration is his own, with violin on ‘Ulysses’ and treated double bass on ‘Urano’ recorded by musicians in Tijuana. Corona sees this EP as a transition between Martes and his new album, planned for release in spring 2004. Since the release of Martes, Corona has made the logical progression into film soundtracks, currently putting the finishing touches to the latest film from the producers of one of the biggest Mexican films of all time, Amores Perros. He has been commissioned to remix both Kronos Quartet and Miles Davis works; toured extensively in Europe, Japan and North America; been nominated for the prestigious Ars Electronica award, and was selected by Paul Morley as one of his two favourite albums of 2002 for BBC2’s Late Review... An EP of remixes is currently in the production, and should be out by the end of the year. Reviews of ‘Ulysses’: "Further proof of Murcof's unnerving ability to blur and unite the sonic territory between laptop and orchestra to the point where they become one and the same. In other words, the guy's a genius" DJ "Serious yet beautiful, like Arvo Pärt meeting up with DJ Pierre, only less messy" Muzik Murcof is back in Europe at the end of July for shows at The Big Chill (UK) and Les Siestes Electroniques (France). He will return in November 2003 for more. New Leaf merchandise We have a couple of new limited edition items available at PostEverything for all you Leaf gatherers out there. First up is a very scarce blue windcheater jacket with the Leaf logo tastefully embroidered on the left breast. There are hardly any of these left, so if you want one, go to: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=3368 We also have a personal CD player case with an embroidered logo and enough space for 12 CDs, etc. You can find pictures and more info here: http://www.posteverything.com/artists/release.php?id=3371 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- 5. Other new releases We have licensed Japanese hip-hop producer Riow Arai's classic 'Mind Edit' album for worldwide release this autumn. The album was originally released by cult Japanese label Soup-Disk, but it never made it very far from home. It's been a while coming, but Arai's skewed, crunchy instrumentals sound fresh as a daisy, and deserve to be heard! The album will be out in October, preceded by a limited 12” that includes 5 of the best cuts from his career, going back to 1998. 310 release their fifth album album this October. Entitled 'Recessional', the album is undoubtedly their best and most cohesive yet, the product of two year's work in Seattle and New York. The album is focussed thematically around the ideas of cities and oceans, water and streets. The album will be available on CD and vinyl, with artwork by Non-Format, and will be preceded by a very limited edition 7" single including 'Opposite Corners' from the album, and the otherwise unavailable 'Extra Virgin'. The 7" will ONLY be available through PostEverything on a first come first served basis, so keep your eye on the site for more news. The group (Joseph Dierker, Tim Donovan and Andrew Sigler) are also set to release a limited edition live album themselves later this year, which will be available to order through PE soon. PJ Harvey collaborator Rob Ellis is currently putting the finishing touches to his second album of solo piano pieces, the follow-up to 2000’s ‘Music For The Home’. Provisionally entitled ‘the Empty House’, we plan to release the album in early 2004, once again in top notch Non-Format artwork. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- 6.
