agreed! i might be wrong but the show seemed to get little to no publicity
so i think a lot of people weren't aware it was happening. which is really
too bad for fehlmann and jelinek since they had just come from selling out
tonic in NYC... anyway here is a mini-review, on the fly:
for those who were there early, greg davis and steve hess put on a pretty
good performance of abstract improv percussion/DSP. it was a complete
departure from greg's usual more musical material and it was unfortunate
that no one was there for the first half of their set. however, it was
easier for me to enjoy what they were doing because it was very very quiet
in the space. i think ultimately the delicate and restrained drones and
approach to the end of their set would be best experienced in a very
controlled environment like a small gallery, where everyone is there to
listen, not socialize...
jan jelinek threw everyone for a loop with a very dense but beautiful set of
mostly ambient material. nowhere in sight was the funky techhouse of farben,
or even the more r&b-slanted material of his latest full-length. the tension
was palpable in the room: everyone was leaning in, waiting for that beat to
drop, and only occasionally did it deliver. this, however, was the best
aspect of his performance, circumventing expectations but still putting on
an amazing set.
thomas fehlmann walked up there and from the start it was slammin. totally
excellent kompakt-styled techhouse, very similar to his full-length on the
label but he changed it up, too. all in a very seamless mix, with the
ability to totally work the crowd. admittedly i've never been a huge fan of
the orb but between his newest 12" and CD and this top-notch performance i
have enormous respect for fehlmann. (and that orb 12" on kompakt is pretty
hot, too!)
in chicago's defense, the show seemed to be overlooked by virtually all
local press, and it was a rainy/cold tuesday evening, so i'm glad that as
many showed as they did... but given how good these guys are, it was
disappointing that more people weren't in the door to experience it
firsthand.
