+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ under the radar // http://utr.praemedia.com +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ [ april 22: under the radar // at 26Mix ] UNDER THE RADAR at 26Mix http://www.26mix.com/ 3024 Mission Street @ 26th Street San Francisco 9:00pm - Close $5.00 Sex and intellect for earth day! LIVE PERFORMANCES: THE LOVEMAKERS The Lovemakers offer up electropop dance songs punctuated with boy-girl vocals, electric violin, vibrator solos, and shoegazing Robert Smith guitar lines. Although the sweat-drenched stage antics might fool you, a typical conversation with TLM will generally bring you into the depths of synthesizer geekdom, classical music muses, or most frequently, smack in the middle of J.R.R. Tolkien's middle earth! A preoccupation with the fantastic colours TLM's approach to music making, taking inspiration from many fronts: 80s pop legends The Human League, Bjork, Le Tigre, and Oakland's own burgeoning synth-happy music scene. According to Lord Grunge (of Pittsburg Hip Hop duo Grand Buffet), the Lovemakers sound "like a pink Ferrari driving through a mountain of cocaine." MATT DAVIGNON Matt Davignon of Oakland, California has been performing and recording his own brand of experimental music for the last 9 years. Primarily self taught, he creates most of his music (both live and recorded) through improvisation, often imitating everyday sound phenomena or focusing on often-overlooked aural characteristics. Matt does not own or seek expensive equipment. He prefers to make do with what is already within reach. Instruments he uses include turntable, tape, sampling/looping devices, cd, found objects, field recordings, prepared acoustic guitar, keyboard, slide whistles and vocal sounds. TRI-CORNERED TENT SHOW Almost everyday in the news there are stories about how a group of scientists after so many decades of painstaking research and work create a new drug or make new discoveries, but how many times does one read about a group of musicians that have done the same thing? A trio of experimental and improvisational musicians called the Tri-Cornered Tent Show has done just that. It has taken them the last part of the last century (25 years to be exact) of dedicated practice, research, and patience that brings them to announce the release of "Maze Above the Abyss", "Tri-Cornered Tent Show", and "Beneath the Mountains of Madness" all encased in 3 compact discs. The musical journey began with initial tracks being recorded using the ancient anti-deluvian technology of electronics from the 70's. Though methodical deciphering of the Lovcraft short story "The music of Eric Zann", other related stories expanded upon Lovecraft's Greater Cthulu Mythos they began recording free improvisation and orchestrated sound sculpture over those 25 years to create the projects now available on the new bay area label Edgetone Records. Now, they come out from their exile held up in a well-insulated dank little studio in the depths of Richmond California. By the shear force of will and their dedication to the world of improvisation, they have a unique set of music to merit them worthy of attention. In a world of pop can music they could teach a class in patience and creation.
