Vladislav Delay (also known as Luomo) in the art gallery next door to the
Medicine Bar. For more info on this event check out the website.
Now here's a little bit of info on our live artists :
++ Christian Kleine ++
Default regulars will already know Mr. Kleine's name thanks to an awesome set
in late 2002 from Thaddi Herrmann, the other member of electronica supergroup
Herrmann and Kleine. In this project, Christian and Thaddi have experimented
with the lighter, more upbeat side of the electronic music scene. However in
Christian's solo work, fast beatbox beats and awe inducing sparkly melodies
are replaced in favour of a more downbeat, subtle approach.
We have already been treated to two excellent albums, 'Beyond Repair' on the
ever-reliable City Centre Offices, and 'Valis' on cult indietronica label Morr
Music. Both were packed with lovingly and carefully crafted tracks, fuleing
thoughts of good times, reflecting on the more meaningful moments within us
and pushing the depth of the often shallow electronic sound. More recently,
Christian has released the 'Firn' ep, also through City Centre Offices, with
these four tracks he has taken his sound to another place again, experimenting
with a more upbeat pace and even branching into a house framework, while still
retaining the gorgeous subtleties we have come to know and to love.
There is not really much more we can say about Christian, he is a firm
favourite here and we cannot tell you enough how much his music means to us.
We are very lucky to be able to bring him to Birmingham and we hope you will
all feel the same way. Spread the love.
++ EU ++
Sasha Zaitsev and Ilya Baramiya (aka EU) have had a busy period since
'Reframing; the release of which prompted a whole host of requests from labels
(large and small) for compilation contributions, some of which EU succumbed
to. These were labels as diverse as Peacefrog, Lo, Vertical Form, Merck, Neo
Ouija, Earworm and many others. They were also commissioned to create a
10-minute mix of their debut (NME Single of the Week!) P2 release 'Wienn' for
an ITV1 (UK National terrestrial TV) audio-visual mix show, Mixmasters, with
visuals supplied by Red Dog. They were also invited to perform a session for
One World (Radio 1) which was broadcast in May, as part of a PAUSE_2 feature
show.
Widely renowned within the electronic world of music for their
DSP-glitch-a-thons and abstract beatscapes; it is these people whom Warm Math
will shock the most. With this release, EU have moved away from the synthetic
sound of digital electronics, to one which is more.. romantic.. maybe?
Experimental yet romantic, somehow.. Sasha and Ilya seamlessly transform
complex ideas and techniques into simple sounds, and this forms part of the
fundamental difference from their previous works. Rather than recording
experimentation for the sake of experimenting, EU actually set out to record
an album of 'songs' instead of just 'tracks'. They've still used techniques
and sounds familiar to fans of modern electronica, but with emphasis on a more
organic and human sound. This doesn't mean that their music has become
over-simplified, instead it makes a refreshing change from the current slew of
familiar electronic sounds.
++ Mr Projectile ++
After recieving great acclaim for his work on mp3.com, Minneapolis resident
Matt Arnold, better known as Mr. Projectile was snapped up by cult electronica
label Toytronic. This relationship flowered and gave us the beautiful 'Pug
Times' which was thrown out on a luscious slab of white wax. Since this
release, Matt has tickled our earlobes with tracks on the sublime Benbecula,
the clicky housey Parotic and of course, his new home Musik Aus Strom.
Most recently Matt's music came to our attention on the Musik Aus Strom/!K7
compilation 'Mas Confusion' which has been a staple for Default goers for some
time now. In fact, his track 'less math, more music' was used a tagline for
the record and bears a sentiment which rings very true to our ears here in
Birmingham!
Anyhow, enough jibber jabber - you can expect truly great things from this
show. Matt's music is sublime and enriching, a subtle blend of chopped digital
crunches and carefully manipulated melodies. The live show itself will be
something of an oddity - an improvisational jam using geniune gear (seriously
kids, he aint just using a laptop!). It's not every day you get to see a
Projectile in Birmingham, he has come all the way over from the USA to see us,
so don't miss out on this chance, you may never get another!
