just picked up the "let me out" 12" at amoeba for $4.... why is this guy so slept on? he's doing amazing stuff with rugged breaks, nasty bass, and the most fucked up, processed vocals around. i'd think this guy would get so much more attention. must be because he's french. oh, and he looks like a hippie. whatever, amazing stuff... philip sherburne managing editor, flavorpill sf http://www.flavorpill.net contributing editor, neumu http://www.neumu.net/needledrops do you want new wave or do you want the truth? http://www.audio.bobblehead.org/phil.html

I bought a Doctor L album once on the strength of FE's (I think it was Hrvatski's) description. While there were a couple of worthy tracks it was mostly disappointing filler. If you bought a 12" single it was probably pretty neat, but his albums are seriously hit or miss- also, his voice processing struck me as having a kind of sideshow quality on a lot of tracks, kind of like that LOOK AT ME I HAVE FIFTEEN NEW VST PLUGINS FOR PRO TOOLS behavior that people are always complaining about. yeah, i should have noted that i think he's getting much better. i do agree about some of the earlier albums - there hasn't always been enough to keep my attention (with the exception of the psycho on da bus album, with tony allen). however this 12" is definitely recommended, and i think he's going in an interesting direction. his set at sonar this summer was fantastic, and i'm finding him spending more time on his voice -- which is quite soulful -- and less on his plugins. but thomas' points are duly noted. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Millar" <tmillar@comcast.net> To: "Philip Sherburne" <psherburne@mindspring.com>; <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Saturday, November 09, 2002 9:48 PM Subject: Re: [idm] doctor l
