Carsten Jost "A Certain Kind" ep (klang) 4 track ep, and the title track is the main event, a psychedelic industrial dungeon sort of affair. stumpy, almost funky, techno kick, snare, hat are set up for metallic clanks and swells, and stuff that kind of sounds like guitar feedback, warm distortion. A bunch of the coloristic-surprise sounds protrude loudly from the mix. It's very nice; it all hangs together with that sort of analog buzz you might find in Basic Channel spinoffs, but it's quite a different sort of cocktail. on the flip there's a nice, if simpler piece along similar lines. a couple of pleasantly minimal low key tracks fill out the EP. Avanti "G-Man" (force inc) God, I just love this guy. More sleek, hypnotic grooves with deep atmospheres. And, quite gratuitously, the photography on the jacket is great, too. Eight Miles High "Katalog" on this album (as for his "Kaleidescope" project) Roman Flugel goes ecclectic. after an amusing Byrds intro, we find a truckload of tunes, each rendered in a different style. there's stuff that would be considered 'melodic IDM', minimal techno, post-Aphex breakbeat, loungey etc. The music is never bad, really, but it's like he's skipping along a little too quickly, granting each track just enough to seem 'finished' without really discovering anything too exciting or fresh. A bunch of nice moments sunk by a pervasive mediocrity. I was surprised, I really liked his last Acid Jesus ep; perhaps he's better off with a stricter agenda. ---------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
