hells yeah. there have been a slew of representative comps in the last year, and while some of the best tracks in the genre are only on 12s, the comps are a great place to start: the good good (2000 black) - released by planet E in the US, featuring dego's selection of deep funk and soul laws of motion (laws of motion) - a little housier, incl. modaji & stephane attias phuturistic dancin (bitasweet) - more percussive breakbeat funk family planning (main squeeze) - IG Culture's joint; the furthest "out" the genre goes off limits 2 (sonar kollektiv) - from the jazzanova extended family, a little more melodic soul people make the world go round (people) co-operation (co-op) - the collective effort between people, mainsqueeze, and all the above... sorry about the truncated descriptions - but any of these would be good starting points for the mixture of breaks, deep house, funk, soul and detroit techno that is broken beat... cheers philip

I'd like to warn the original poster that I do NOT think that the slick, jazzy, homogenised sound that Jazzanova create is anywhere near the 'broken beats' he is looking for. Nothing *wrong* with Jazzanova, but I really don't believe it fits the bill in the querent's case. Maybe you'd want to look at a comp like "The Return of the DJ" . although these are overtly hip-hoppy(quite vocal) breakbeats. Actually, quite a bit of Jazzanova's stuff is "broken beat", they're one of the firsts to experiment with those beats and develop that sound. I absolutely LOVE the slick, jazzy, NOT "homogenised" - there's a lot going on in terms of influences (they have a unique and distinctive STYLE) - sound of Jazzanova. The soon-to-be-released album is brilliant, BTW. And no, I'm not looking for breakbeats. It's definitely the more syncopated, jazzy, deep-house-influenced cousin of 2-step that I'm looking for, what's also referred to as the "West London sound". It's very eclectic and hard to pin down, though. 4Hero, Moonstaar are some of the people doing it that i know of... People like 4Hero are doing more eclectic "artist's" albums and not necessarily the "broken beats". It's the dancefloor stuff that I heard DJs spin that I'm particularly looking for. ----- Original Message ----- From: Irene McC Sent: Friday, April 19, 2002 10:52 PM To: idm@hyperreal.org Cc: charlesjaxx@hotmail.com Subject: Re: [idm] Broken beat On 20 Apr 2002 at 1:02, thomas shrubsole wrote:

Hmmm.....look to a few of the Planet E comps (2000 Black, some of the tracks Carl's Designer Music and Onsumothasheeat), the Atjazz full length, the Truby Trio DJ Kicks and the Fauna Flash remix record (ConFusion) wander between that and downtempo latinesque flavors. The Rootdown 99 comp as well. The Vision 12"s. Most of what Degiorgio and some of what Ian O'Brien are up to these days (when it isn't out and out nu-fusion). I guess - in terms of floor friendly stuff - I'd suggest trying Designer Music...if what you mean by 'f'loor friendly' translates into something which might have some techno flavor here and there. Ground Zero, Starbaby, Down Low are farily new places to look some of what I'd call smooth, warm and melodic techno, but that's at least a branch away from what you're seeking. Other places to poke around might be Emoticonrecordings (and Tom Churchill's Nordic tracker is sure nice). I realize I'm wandering all over the map, but I'm trying to get a handle on what you mean "the more floor friendly" aspect of broken beat. jeff --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Oh okay. If you like it you like it. I've heard a promo of the soon to be released and thought it wasn't up to much, but then again, I'm not really one for vocals and it seems pretty vocal-heavy (? am I thinking of the same album?) Sorry if I was off-track.
