thought that people on this list might find this article about collecting interesting/amusing: http://www.nationalpost.com/search/story.html?f=/stories/20020406/562548.html&qs=jeet a sampling: Canadian filmmaker Alan Zweig surveyed this type of obsessive behaviour in his recent documentary, Vinyl, where one record collector compared his hobby to drug addition. "What's the correlation between abusing substances and buying records?" asks one of Zweig's interviewees. "Both are compulsive. Both are escapist. There is ritual involved in both. Both take huge chunks of time. Both regulate the emotions." i'm not sure that i agree with all the sentiments expressed in the article, but it definitely has a point. i know one of the more twisted pleasures i get from idm is hunting down obscure/rare records via the internet. like trying to find those damn toytronic records i missed the first time around. thrill of the hunt and all that, i guess. - d
