Of course not. It works for an entirely different set of people who are fed up with popular music, or who are open to new things. Perhaps people who like Moby, or Enya, or Delerium, or Tortoise will think BoC are the bees knees. Popular music for teens may have to sell itself out, but BoC may yet become relatively popular without pandering to the 12 year old girl audience. Look at what's happened with the Avalanches in the UK after all. It's not as though you even need radio play to be _that_ popular. I can't remember a single time I've heard Jurassic 5 on the radio, yet they're fairly popular. Curious to know : what exatly HAS happened? I have heard the album twice, found it raucous and didn't understand what all the fuss was about - is it hugely popular, or what? I think the Avalanches cd is quite excellent and better than most nearly all the idm put out. Its a lot of fun to listen to and the replayability is almost infinite. I love how each track melts into the next. And nearly each track has some hook or sample that is memorable. Good to play Tetris Attack to. On Sun, 24 Feb 2002, Irene McC wrote:

Perhaps some people from the UK can shed more light than I, but I was under the impression it was fairly popular. I've seen interviews with a few of the guys on MTV Europe, and I know some of their singles charted quite high, one of them possibly breaking the UK top ten. Is raucous a bad thing now? :)

It's gone over well here with the indie kids - I bought a copy myself, like it a fair bit. Can't find it now that I wanna listen to it. :) --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

They're fairly huge in their homeland of Australia, as far as this kind of thing goes. At least, every yoof here seems to knows who the Avalanches are, whether or not they normally listen to pop radio or not. They won an absolutely ridiculous number of music industry awards at the Australian equivalent of the Grammies (or whichever is the music one for mainstream America - are Grammies TV? *shrug*). For the record, I think they're utterly shambolic in a good way.
