greg davis "arbor" released next month
what's up with upcoming releases
is it live?
and the ever popular gossip column
imminent new releases
february 19th will see the release of "arbor" by greg davis. we like
to think of "arbor" as a kind of electronic folk record. we really
don't want to sit here and describe it for you (we'll leave that up
to the reviewers!) but you can read a few words we've written about
it at
<
http://www.carparkrecords.com/arbor.html>www.carparkrecords.com/arbor.html
if you're a fan of such artists as leo kottke, fennesz, and jim
o'rourke we think you'll dig this one.
greg recently completed a week-long tour with hrvatski (aka keith
fullerton whitman) of the north american east coast and midwest.
they brought their music to folks in chicago, cleveland, new york,
baltimore, princeton, and williamsburg, virginia. thanks again to
everyone who supported the tour. greg and keith created music for a
multimedia dance event at the merce cunningham studio in manhattan
which was reviewed in the new york times! congrats to them.
what lies ahead for 2002
2002 will be the busiest year yet for carpark. after "arbor" carpark
has a number of releases "in the oven" so to speak. definite
releases so far will include the marumari remix cd featuring such
laptop luminaries as cex, lackluster, stars as eyes, lusine, greg
davis, colongib, to rococo rot, octopus inc., and casino vs. japan.
plus there's a rumor of a swirlies remix.
also in the works is the debut carpark release from japanese artist
ogurusu norihide. "humour" compiles two self-released eps that
ogurusu has been making by hand in tokyo. carpark thinks ogurusu is
really onto something. in his music can be heard inspirations of
breezy bossa nova, microsound, and ambient pop. when ogurusu
norihide is not making music with his guitar, laptop, and keyboards,
he is studying to become a shinto priest in tokyo.
another exciting release for early 2002 is a dvd by takagi masakatsu
entitled "opus pia." this multimedia disc is the beginning of a
lifelong series for takagi. "opus pia" will contain pia #1-11.
futures series will be forthcoming. takagi has taken untreated video
from his travels around the world and blended them with some of his
audio to create a meditative and uplifting view of humanity. we look
forward to future pia dvds.
further on in the year carpark plans releases with signer (from the
involve label) and of course the kit clatyon/safety scissors ping
pong cd.
half-live
greg davis will be embarking upon a full north american and european
tour come this march to support his new record. he will tour europe
with hrvatski (aka keith fullerton whitman) and we are very close to
making a north american tour announcement. keep the dial on carpark
for more details.
greg will be playing in manhattan on friday night january 18th at
cinema classics with 1 mile north. it should be a really nice mellow
night so you should come down if you're in new york city. there will
be video projections and a fun mix of analog and digital
instrumentation. greg is gonna pull out the acoustic guitar for this
one. and cover is only like $4. fun fun fun!
jake mandell is playing some european dates in january/february:
january 28th - berlin, wmf - NI presents no future
february 2nd - eupen, belgium - katakomben -

the juicy bits
lots of tasty treats for you this month. well you may remember how
last month we reported that marumari was writing a science fiction
novel. we forgot to mention that the book will become a
marumari-produced feature length film and that marumari will also
score the soundtrack. whew! not sure how long THAT is gonna take.
there is going to be a marumari baby! yes josh and sasha are
expecting their own little baby m this summer. and have you seen the
latest issue of urb magazine? marumari "supermogadon" is one of
their top 20 records of 2001! pretty crazy.
we also hear rumors that 2002 will see a limited marumari cd release.
one of our friends in canada is starting up a label that will
specialize in limited cd releases with editions of 200. these should
be gone before you can say "i lost my donut in the dilithium
chamber." and can anyone confirm that the marumari "baby m" video
has been getting daytime play on mtv2? we heard this but haven't
seen this.
jake mandell has a new website. check out
<
http://www.orange-pink.com>www.orange-pink.com to see what jake has
been up to in berlin these days.
also be on the lookout for a new 7" on autumn records next month with
solo material from greg davis and donald mennerich. limited
quantities on this one.
whew
that'll do it for this month. happy new year to everyone and best
wishes for the future. let us know if you don't want to receive this
newsletter anymore.
best,
todd
