Tributes to record boss who lost his fight with cancer
By David Dunn
THE widow of a Sheffield record label boss has asked friends for photos and
written memories of the music lover for his two heartbroken children.
A funeral service for Warp Records co-owner Rob Mitchell, who last week lost
his battle with cancer, will take place tomorrow, Wednesday. But his widow
Michelle hopes to ensure his memory lives on for his youngsters by
encouraging friends of the 38-year-old Sheffielder to send letters or photos
of their memories of the man.
Rob, a Blades fan who started his record label with friend Steve Beckett in
the '90s, died peacefully at home last Monday. He was the father of two
children, Sam and Isabel. He was also the oldest son of John and Eirlys and
had three brothers, Dave, Mike and Tom.
His funeral "to celebrate his life" will take place at Hutcliffe Wood Road
Crematorium, Perrywood Lane, Abbeydale, at 3pm, followed by a gathering at
Beauchief Hotel, Abbeydale Rd South. Rob's family have asked that any
donations be made to Bristol Cancer Centre and Frances Carroll.
Warp Records began life within a record shop on Division Street before
moving to the Cultural Industries Quarter and then West Street. The record
company, which focussed on electronic music and uncommercial dance acts
moved to London last year as it outgrew its Sheffield roots. But family,
friends and football allegiances meant Rob was a regular visitor to the
city.
Warp colleague Simon Halliday asked that donation cheques, payable to
Bristol Cancer Centre, be forwarded to Cooksey and Son Funeral Directors,
190 Fortis Green Road, Muswell Hill, London, N10 3DY marked "Rob Mitchell
donation."
He added: "Michelle would also like people to write cards or letters or send
photos of their memories of Rob which can be collected and given to the
children."
Please send to Michelle c/o Warp Records, Spectrum House, 32-34 Gordon House
Rd, London NW5 1LP.
