demf :: Friday, may 25th, 2001 :: Visited the Amsterdam lounge (in Windsor) last night, sipping my vodca-7, and enjoying some pleasant tunes by some Detroit/Windsor folks like Bill Van Loo (he also has a track on Carl Craig's "All Access" compilation via Planet E, check that one out), Chris Bissonnette et al..Also met many folks from all over the globe such as Holland, Australia, you name it. After this event, someone mentioned that Derrick May was in Windsor at this place called "Platinum" and by this time it's already 2am. So i decide to go --Why not see Derrick kick off the weekend? Instead of going to my car, i check out Platinum. Bottom line.. Derrick May didn't get on the boards until about 5am, he was walking around the venue, and i even had a chance to shake hands and share a few words, a really nice fella!! I definitely was excited to meet "Mr. Innovator". He played a solid solid solid set of straight detroit techno and electro while the basslines bounced off everyone's chest. What a night. demf :: saturday, may 26th, 2001 :: Had the opportunity (?) to see Autechre rip the systems last night from 9 to 10pm. (Someone on Skam mixed beforehand for about a half hour). They managed to completely tear through everyone's ears with an hour's worth of inconsistent yet rhythmic beats and heavy heavy basslines. This was my first time seeing Ae live, and without earplugs too. I was glad to snap up a nice black on gray Autechre tee-shirt. (Also picked up a black on grey Plastikman T..) While doing my rounds in the underground stage, i also met up with ADULT. (Adam Miller and Nicole Kuperus of ERSATZ AUDIO [www.ersatzaudio.com] --they're doing a live show on June 9th at the Magic Stick in Detroit). We took a couple of snap shots while I sported my NEO OUIJA tee-shirt.. Quite an interesting couple, so this is when i plug their new album, "Resuscitation" ! Go buy it, or be SIDE-SWIPED! Also managed to catch a (peculiar) KIT CLAYTON set just before AE hit the front stage. Kit and his assistant female companion were hidden behind the stage, while everyone looked at an empty front stage. A few friends of mine soon figured out that KIT was actually behind the dance floor on two labtops wearing a RUN DMC sweater. His assistant sat next to him with some very odd setup of colored leaves. (She was messing about with the on-screen video with a tee-pee styled setup connected to one of the laptops. KIT CLAYTON managed to produced some distorted, stretched out ambient dub chaos, while subtly inserting some fancy 4/4 beats layered above the mess of melodies. He looked very concerned smoking and drinking while noodling with the laptops. I have pictures of that as well, and will scan in the next week.. demf :: sunday, may 27th, 2001 :: Tons and tons of people pushing around to get to other stages, mere inches from your body at every second. Tonight was jammed packed, many folks dancing, many candy-ravers laughing and sucking on strange plastic objects.. but i was there to see Kenny Larkin, and he played a fine set packed with banging bass driven techno. I didn't recall too many of the numbers, as i don't have much Kenny Larkin material, but the light rain caused myself and my bro to find shelter.. So we walked down to the "Underground" stage, and caught some people break-dancing to PLASTIKMAN, loads of fun there? Well the music was great nonetheless. Overall this evening was "so-so". Not too great.. one of the main stages hosted some acid-techno where 1000s of people were dancing about. I just didn't quite grasp the fella blowing on his horn during the acid-techno set. demf :: monday, may 28th, 2001 :: Tonight i thought to myself, "..should i go or shouldn't i go?" Inner City, Juan Atkins and Derrick May trio to close off this festival could not be bypassed, right? Well.. i missed Inner City's set (blame it on the Windsor/Detroit tunnel access), i am sure it was decent, but i really want to see Juan and Derrick kicking it all out. Juan hit the main stage at around 9:15 fusing some classic classic Transmat and Metroplex material for the entire croud. 1000s and 1000s of folks just dancing about to the lovely slow pulsing electro grooves of Detroit. Juan was scheduled for an hour i believe, after exactly one hour, a massive thunder storm decided to roll into hart plaza, including hail as an additive. Everyone immediately seeked shelter, as they torn down the stage, throwing tarps on the speakers, and evacuating the area. It was a SAD SAD display. Right when Derrick May was supposed to get on board, the show gets CANCELLED. So there i was drenched in water, but i did manage to meet an interesting fellow. While watching Juan and tapping my feet to the rhythms, i noticed a slim figure to my immediate right. No hair on this fellas head, and some slim-line glasses wrapped around his ears. It was Mr. Ritchie of all people, standing right there (Plastikman). I didn't have much to say, nor could we just talk (the music was peaking), but i did congratulate him on a lovely piece in Urb. Managed to grab some lovely stickers.. So folks.. DEMF RAINED OUT for Monday. No DERRICK MAY. But i am still content, i managed to catch DERRICK play out in WINDSOR on friday night, so all is complete. Ciao until next year? I support Carl Craig.
