Was able to throw together another batch of reviews. With all the recent review and list duties, the little lady and job are feeling neglected! : ) . Kid606: ps you love me cd (Mille Plateaux) Twelve tracks here including eight fabulous remixes of 'PS I Love You' tracks by Matmos, Atom (atom heart), Farben, Pan American, Rechenzentrum, Electric Company, Twerk, and Kid606 himself. The album starts out with a new track called 'act yr age' which features a nice minimal click-techno track driving more by dueling synth lines than by the muted percussion. The matmos remix pumps up the bpms with a quirky 4x4 house remix that matmos has gotten so good at recently. The Atom mix adapts a deep techno sound but with more of a cut-up style. The Farben mix is typical farbenesque dubby atmospheric click-techno that I, personally, can never get enough of. Pan American delivers a very impressive remix featuring deep muted 4x4 percussion of sparse minimal eno-esque piano with a few pops, glitches, and sfx thrown in for good measure (Has Pan American done anything else in the percussive techno style?). Kitty Yo's Rechenzentrum delivers a more straightforward cytrax-raum-force tracks-styled mix. Electric Company's contribution is an eclectic mix that alternates tempos and styles - from intermittent downtempo squelchy guitar loops to short bursts of skittery minimalish techno but always with a slightly abrasive edge. Next Twerk brings us back to the clicktechno sound but adds some nice synth washes, gurgling electronics and punchier percussions to make this mix one of the more floor-friendly ones on the album. The last four tracks are two new tracks that are in the ambient style of the PS I Love You album, as well as two percussive Kid606 remixes of PS I Love You tracks. I really enjoyed the original 'PS I Love You' and this remix album is a nice compliment to the original rlease. 'P.S. You Love Me' is recommended for those into warm atmospheric click-techno with an experimental and sometimes playful edge. . Thredes & Vaynes vol. 1 comp 12" (Context) A nice compilation ep on Sutekh's own Context label featuring new tracks from Kit Clayton, Safety Scissors, Portable, Ben Nevile, and Sutekh himself. The ep starts with a 4-minute beatless dub-tinged ambient sounscape from Portable called 'Curve (edit).' Next comes the best track on the release, 'Homonym Cask,' which is a tight techno-dub track from Kit Clayton in the vein of his ~Scape label material. The a-side comes to a close with 'Until' - a 3-minute beatless track of spacious textures and floating melodies by Sutekh. The flip of this ep starts with nice driving dubdy-house affair called 'Chick' from newcomer Ben Nevile. Finally Safety Scissors closes out the compilation with a percussive minimal tech-houser highlighted by the faint mumbling vocals in the background. A very good compilation release from Context that is well worth tracking down. For more information and mp3 samples of this and all Context label releases, visit their website at: http://www.context.fm/ . Mokira: kuket 7" (Klang Galerie) After impressive albums this year on Mille Plateaux, Raster-Noton, and Komplott as well as a slew of compilation appearances, Andreas Tilliander delivers an insanely limited 4-track 7" release. The ep starts with the title track 'Kuket' which is a percussive minimal clicktechno track with gurgles & glitches in the background. 'Make,' the next track, has a deeper warmer backdrop for the skeletal dub framework of the track. 'Barklong' is a nice Pole-like experimental click-dub track. The final track, 'Else' is a short track on minimal percussion and shrill noises. Overall, the 'Kuket' ep is a nice ep of experimental click-dub-techno right in line with previous Andreas Tilliander/Mokira releases. It's a shame that this release is so limited because it deserves to be heard my more than 100 people (which is what this 7" was limited to. For more info about this release check the label website at: http://www.klanggalerie.com/ or visit Mokira's website at http://www.mokira.com/ . T.B.C. 2001 comp 2xlp (ThrillBeatConstruction) This compilation release was a lucky find at the local recordshop this week. Before I walked in the door I hadnt heard anything about this compilation and I would have bought my records and left had is not been for its unusual silver wrapping paper and total lack of information on the outside. So I asked the guy at the recordshop about this mysterious release and he informed me that it was some limited german compilation featuring tracks from Arovane, Hermann & Kleine, Phonem, Skanfrom and some others. That's all I needed to hear so I snapped it up and now I'm thrilled that I did. This compilation features 13 tracks from the above mentioned artists as well as some new & lesser-knowns including Lowtec, Beefcake, Frederik Schikowski, Nicotine, Machiste, Item, and Mix At Home. Highlights on this one include Arovane's smooth atmospheric electronica 'Noimh,' Skanfrom's lush electro-tinged 'Midnight Romanc,' Hermann & Kleine's casual 'A Day In a Park,' Machiste's new-wave electro 'Reale La VitaŠcu," Item's minimal but elegant 'Taufrisch,' and Phonem's beatless ambient experiement 'Un Barrage Contre Le Pacifique.' The other tracks on this comp range from decent to one or two below average tracks but overall a great compilation of modern melodic eletronic music. Highly recommended (if you can find it - supposedly limited to 500 copies worldwide). For more information check out the Thrill Beat Construction website at http://www.thrillbeatconstruction.de . Vote Robot: in meorm na lp (Kraak) After two self-released albums and a handful of limited 7" releases, the canadian experimental duo Vote Robot get release on an established label. 'In Meorm Na' features twelve tracks of gurgling glitchy electronica right in line with the early works of Oval but mixed with a drone or environmental element giving this release a rougher even murkier sound. Fans of a melodic glitch meets a darker Mego or Touch sound might want to check this one out. Also of interest is the unusual and somewhat disturbing album artwork that includes a pseudo-childlike animal theme (nothing like bunnies, owls, squirrels, bears, foxes, rams, and men with mice-head to entice the experimental electronic music crowd). For more information visit the Kraak3 website at: http://www.kraak.net . Safety Scissors: either or 12" (Plug Research) A taster ep from Safety Scissors of a one track from the forthcoming Plug Researech album 'Parts Water' plus some remixes and new tracks. The ep starts with the album track 'Before' which features Matthew Curry (aka Safety Scissors) lightly singing over his minimal dubbed-out techno. Next comes the Smyglyssna remix of 'Before' which turns the track into a gurgling squelchy instrumental hip-hop track. Next is short track of ambient noodlings called 'More' followed by 'Over' which is a long track of instrumental hip-hop percussion over a looped version of the preceeding track 'More.' The ep ends with an untitled track which is actually a dubbed-out ambient instrumental version of 'Before.' Overall 'Either Or' is another solid and diverse ep for Safety Scissors and a nice taster for the forthcoming album. Recommended!
