well, like I said, it was more directed at the thread as a whole, and in particular, some earlier messages. I just responded to yours because that's the one I was on when I had the impulse to vent. Sorry if you took it personally :/

I'm wondering who in particular is "complete and utter crap?" I've obtained some fine music lately. I agree with you that if you're in to IDM-type stuff, after a while the abundance of producers can get kind of overwhelming, and there's a lot of stuff out there that other people love that I don't really think is that great. Still, if most of the stuff you've heard is just "sonic trickery and software wanking," I'd say maybe you're listening to the wrong stuff for you. There's plenty of stuff that isn't like you describe, as far as my ears can tell. Of course, no one could be specific without having a more specific idea of what it is you don't like, but here's a specific list of artists I've liked a whole lot lately: Freeform Proem Gimmik (what do people think of his new 12" on toytronic?) Autechre Savath & Savalas Manitoba Marumari Jake Mandell (actually he's kind of hit-and-miss for me) Delarosa & Asora (but not the Backsome EP :P) and I just heard Phonem's "Hydro Electric" which I thought was quite nice, but maybe only an average sort of nice... and that's just off the top of my head. --------------------------------------------------- Get free personalized email at http://www.iname.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I'm melting in joy when I recall that this year should bring us a bunch of new full lenghts from Symon "Magic" Pyke... :)

Phonem's music is one of the best at the moment. imho

in fact, I'm ready to undersign this list in full except for Manitoba which I have not listened yet (thanx for the hint). ;) Though, I'm wondering how you could have missed so many great artists who produced amazing idm related music last year like: Fizzarum, L'usine, Metamatics, Novel 23, MD, Detroit Escalator Co., Ambidextrous, Arovane... In my mind I should also add to this list tons of great new music that I still missed in my shopping up to now. Thanx for telling there are people listening to good music out there... see, I thought it was nice, but not really worth a purchase.

yeah, definitely check it out; probably not everyone's cupa taffey, but it flipped my switch

Fizzarum I like; it was at least better than that Fibla release. First time I heard it, I thought immediately of Proem and Gimmik, but it hasn't had the same staying power with me; it's kinda worn thin while I still like the other two. L'usine's self-titled album on isophlux was ... boring? I dunno; didn't capture me and I'm glad I sold it. L'usine ICL, on the other hand - I just heard "A Pseudo Steady State" for the first time yesterday, coincidentally, and I have to say the change and the variety and the adventurousness was refreshing and surprising. I wish I'd bought it sooner, and I agree, L'usine ICL should be on that list :) Metamatics, I haven't heard more than one or two tracks here or there, so I can't say, but I haven't been impressed so far. I'll give 'em more of a chance. Novel 23 is ok, but I'm waiting for more; I've heard one album (the one on Pitchcadet) and a few compilation tracks, but nothing has really stood out for me. MD - ok, so the Merck sound is developing nicely, but again, Appelsap was hit and miss for me, and I'll wait to hear the newer work. Don't know the next two... Arovane - I loved Tides, but as a whole his work seems kind of standard IDM to me. All in all, I guess we just have slightly different tastes! But you're right of course; any list that short is *too* short - there's tons of good stuff and most people who complain about the homogeneity of so-called IDM need to learn that if they don't like a certain specific style they should stop persuing it and stick to what they do like. I mean, yeah, you want to be adventurous, but you also have to realize that if you don't like one artist's head-fuck music you probably won't another, just like if you don't like one folk-guitar artist you probably won't like another. (or at least this strategy saves you money)

A word of warning: Much like the "Project Unison" disc that was recently released by Hydrogen Dukebox, "Dope for the Robot" is a repackaged version of a previously released Metamatics album. In this case, it's a slightly abridged version of the "Metamatics Production" disc released by Clear a few years ago (which was itself a repackaging of material previously released on 12", along with a new track or two). So if you've already got "Metamatics Production", you don't need this "new" album. However, of you DON'T have the Clear disc, you should get this new one, 'cause it's great stuff!
