Has anyone heard the "Clubfoot" 12"? This came in from DK mail list... _______________________________________________ David Kristian vs Giga-Mermaid -----News----- David just finished work on Stephane Morissette's "Otaku"; the Manga/Proto-Culture-based film for which he provided 40 minutes of new beat-driven melodic tracks. No word yet on the possibility of releasing the soundtrack... Watch for special appearances by David on the Japanese edition DVD of Karim Hussain's Subconscious Cruelty, and for those of you who were at NAMM 2000, Applied-Acoustics Systems feature David's comments on the "Tassman" Software Synthesizer demo CD ROM. David's comments on "Tassman" and other fine toys can be read at http://www.harmony-central.com Alien8 Recordings is planning to release a CD of David's collaboration with Sam Shalabi and Alexandre St-Onge (The Shalabi Effect). This album is the last project David did using the EMS VCS-3 synthesizer and should please both the fans of Roomtone and The Shalabi Effect. Otherwise, I'm told that David is still producing 5 or 6 new tracks per week, mostly of the rhythmic variety and that he may be planning to release some of them in the future. David has locked himself into his studio and has decided not to do any live shows or interviews until the new records are out, or he feels he has a sufficient cache of new material. For those of you in Montreal, don't forget to check out Mitchell Akiyama, Jetone and Gordon Krieger this Saturday, Feb 3rd, 2001, at Casa del Popolo, located at 4873 St. Laurent, showtime is 10 pm and the admission is $6. SG ----Rumor Mill----- David has had yet another custom device constructed for him by IC1 Electronics, rumor has it that it allows nearly infinite rhythmic subdivisions on existing Drum Machines... In the past, IC1 Electronics has been responsible for David's "Philmore" Filter/Ring Mod, "CV Harvester" and "Velvet Touch" Oscillator/Modulator to name a few. Karim Hussain & Julien Fonfrede's "City Without Windows" film is currently in pre-production, with David slated to do music and special sound design. We have word that a crate of the Ultra-Rare David Kristian "Clubfoot E.P." has been found somewhere in England... "The Clubfoot E.P." was released in late 1995 and is considered a classic by many fans of David's "Drum n' Bass" stuff. About "The Clubfoot E.P.": -This is also considered the first Canadian Dn'B record -Track titles were messed up: "The Sound" should have read :"Sound!" "Winding" should have read: "My Winding Tricks" -All tracks on this record was produced using a Lexicon JamMan, a Walkman, 2two Korg MS-20s and a Roland R8 Drum Machine. We'll keep you posted on the availability of the 12"... --------------- Also on David Kristian's site: An Interview With (sic) from Internet "Pirate" Radio Oboro featuring early works by (sic) and David Kristian's "Ghanima" from the Intr_version compilation. I've got it on right now. It's pretty spacy, skittery d&b beats on top of interesting textural sounds, with some electro touches mainly in the kinds of sounds used. Quite sparse, actually. It's interesting, but I largely prefer Kristian's more experimental stuff. Clubfoot sounds to me like an ambient Animals on Wheels or something. The 12" is kinda hard to find now, so if you can get in on any of that crate that was supposedly found, I'd say go for it. -p. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The only dn'b stuff I've heard from Kristian is what he put out on Drop Beat a couple years back. I heard there's also a follow-up called "National Kid" on Discrete, but I've never heard it either. I can't believe all the beats come from a drum machine. Sounds like Squarepusher on Crystal Meth. The Animals on Wheels comparison is good too, but I think they sampled their drums like Amon Tobin. --- "P. D." <piotrd@home.com> wrote:

I have it, it's ok. Like most of his work it's technically very well done, but lacks and sort excitement that seperates it from the other "5 to 6 tracks he makes per week". With the amount of equipment he likes to showoff and the potential he's shown in the past, I'd prefer it if he just spent a year or two working on one album instead of release after release of his weekly output. I think he has the potential in him to put out at least one album that might still be remembered 10 years from now. Colin. He already has. It's called "Cricklewood". :) To me, it's easily his best recorded work (I have heard some very tasty live sets, though) and far far above any of his beat-oriented material. The textures and sounds on that album to me are wonderful. And he did spend a while on that one. He was a pretty militant experimentalist at that point. I'll grant that some of his stuff has been patchy, but "Cricklewood" still holds its own for me better than most electronic records I bought from that year. -p. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Cricklewood may be remembered ten years from now, but I think his Beneath the Valley of the Modulars is the true classic-to-become. I'd rate it as highly as Polygon Window or Music has the Right to Children. As far as the gear he likes to show off is concerned, Every time I've seen his live set, he's had a different set-up, and there were no signs of showing off involved. I don't even think he has that much gear, I think it's stuff he's owned over the years; which would make sense, considering the variety of his output. I don't think he records and relaeses randomly, from an old interview I read, he uses about one percent of what he records. The genuine originality of Kristian's music should keep him in record collections for years to come. >From: "Colin Pascal" <cpi23@hotmail.com>
