To me Karl Hyde is the soul of Underworld - his voice, his poetry, and in this sense the later work is as good as the classics (anyone know "8-Ball"?). Not that I dislike the sounds. Though increasingly pop-ish, their style is still unique and interesting, and pretty far from mainstream, much of it has a relaxing, even sexy vibe. I don't know if it is "IDM" but intellegient dance-music it certainly is. Man, I fuckin love Underworld, so I had to pipe in. (Incidentally one of the few "electronic" artists of "my" music that most of my past girlfriends have not only tolerated but actually enjoyed.) Saw them in LA (Hollyowood Bowl) last June doing dubnobasswithmyheadman tracks and a couple later ones. Though there's a few bright spots it mostly leaves me cold. Don't think I listened to Barking more than twice and I couldn't name a track after "Dinosaur Adventure 3d" without peeking.   - Eric Sorenson - N45.569, W122.763 - http://twitter.com/ahpook -
