there are 2 cds called total (1 and 2) which are highlights of kompakt releases. volume 2 came out this past summer, so it doesnt have any selections from the latest 12's, but its still very good and indicative of the labels style. they also came out on vinyl i believe. cl On Fri, 15 Dec 2000, James R. There are a bunch of great comps out on Kompakt that'll give you a taste of the Koln scene (Total1, Total2, Kolnkompakt). I suggest starting with Total1. enjoy (c) At 06:49 PM 12/15/2000 -0500, you wrote:

The 'Schaffelfieber' comp. (KOMPAKT CD8) is also a strong release. Compiled by Wolfgang Voight (aka Gas, Mike Ink) - contains tracks by M:I:5, Sensorama, Freiland etc. from labels like Kompakt, Profan, Freiland, Ladomat and Kanzleramt. Cologne-style minimalism... One thing about this record is that you'll find out how quickly the shuffle beat gets your knickers in a twist. For me, it's right up there with the Tom's Diner covers album (though the lack of a Michael Stipe presence is a definite advantage). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

picked up kompakt's 'schaffelfeiber' last night. all this time i though mike ink was asleep at the helm. got an early kompakt release a while back, and thought it was pretty tepid, but this compilation reveals something else. what's going on here? totally weird sliding house beats? it makes me uncomfortable to listen to it, its like brinkmann on robotussin. good work kompakt! I will second this recommendation. Kompakt in my opinion has been consistently solid since I heard their first CD compilation a while back. Since I don't have a turntable, I'm limited to waiting for their CD compilations to hit... :-( Schaffelfieber is worth it alone for the tracks by Sensorama (if you liked their Pluramon remix, this is even better) and the hard industrial buzz of T.Raumschmiere's "Bolzplatz." I believe the premise is that all the artists set their drum machines/sequencers to the tacky prefab setting of "Shuffle" which usually adds a little swagger and offbeat to otherwise standard loops. So I suppose really it's a novelty disc, but it still works!
