I thought I'd throw an opinion I've had lately of Mike Paradinas. After listening to the new Kid Spatula CD the other day (and I've listened to it many times before), it just seems to me that he's been getting very lazy with his programming. There's a couple of good tracks on there, but most of it seems to be fill-in tracks just to complete an album. It sounds like some of the tracks were written in minutes just so he could get the full piece out the door and into stores. I also had the same type of feeling after I heard Royal Astronomy a few times. I enjoy the album very much, but again it seems like lazy programming. When you listen to an album for the second time and can already hum along to all of the tunes...something isn't right. It's definately a good listen, but a disappointment as far as taking it the extra mile. A combination of the better tracks off of Royal Astronomy and Full Sunken Breaks might have made for a more solid album. Does anyone feel the same way as I do? And does anyone enjoy Jake Slazenger's Makesaracket as much as I do? I think he really hit the spot with a unique style of music on that one. The rhythm and funk on that one just set it aside from all his other aliases. It's too bad he hasn't progressed that one a bit more. And speaking of his aliases, what's the point if they all sound the same? For the most part, Kid Spatula sounds like µ-ziq with the addition of some harder tracks, and one of the Tuskein Raider tracks is the same as a µ-ziq track.....the motorbike track. That type of stuff pisses me off because you know it's all a scam to get you to buy it all. If you want to be called by 5 different names, at least mix it up a bit more. Or just stick to one name and let everyone know the creativity that lies within it. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Mike Paradinas.....but I wish someone could explain the lazyness of late. Don't flame me too hard. Hmm... forgive the presumption, but if one is not slamming the schizophrenic sequencer at 400 bpm is that lazy programming? I feel that his newer stuff has been a bit more "mature" (if that word can be used in the divinely-childlike realm that he records in) than his previous efforts. Not better, mind you... perhaps just older. Them is ma' $0.02. Why should this be a bad thing? I've recently started gatting back into the idea of a 'tune' in music, and have always believed that this is one of Paradinas' strong points. Intelligent dance music doesn't always have to mean musically impenetrable dance music. Maybe it's just a phase I'm going through next week and I'll dump Jimi Tenor in favor of obscure v/vm tracks..... ...talking of which. I managed to see v/vm at the weekend and their versions of the the last Truesteppers single was fairly amazing. I've been saying for ages that it deserves a good remix. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I definately hear what you're saying. Your $.02 is valid. It's certainly more mature than the older stuff. But I'm speaking more about the way he seems to use the same instruments and sounds in a rather ordinary kind of way. Almost as if he were just playing around and felt that he had something good enough to record as a song. Like I said before, there is some really good programming on the last couple of LP's, but it's a shame that the entire composition couldn't be as tight. TekDz9er <<Hmm... forgive the presumption, but if one is not slamming the schizophrenic sequencer at 400 bpm is that lazy programming? I've always thought that on every release there are some incredible tunes, but also some misses...it's been that way since Bluff Limbo and it probably won't change for me...it's just his diversity I guess...i've never been into hardcore or drill&bass for example. So those tunes usually don't do much to me, but his more subtle tunes (like 'Goodbye Goodbye' for example) are incredible and are right up there with the best of 'em imho. I think it's great that he still often uses the same instruments and can still sound more refreshing than many, many other artists out there. Maybe his more recent outings are 'more mature', and although Hasty Boom Alert imho is one of the best tunes ever, after the dust settles in, I still enjoy Tango'n'Vectiv and Bluff Limbo the most off his discog. But I'm just a sentimental fool for that matter I suppose ;) Just some thoughts... ===== Pjotr 'Teccie' Stam || teccie@mindless.com http://www.fredscape.com Den Haag, The Netherlands --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Well the thing is IMHO, I kind of like it when I can listen to an album for a second, third, or even fourth time and still get that feeling like it's something fresh and new that I've never heard before. (Like the feeling I get everytime I listen to EP7). So the humming thing disappointed me because I felt that by the second time I listened to the album, I already recognized each song quite clearly...as if I'd already heard it 10 times. That's just a personal thing, though. Maybe people don't feel the same way. They never do. I picked up the Planet Mu Allstars 'Criminal' 12" at the london party... not only does it have the amazing version of MC Hammer's 'Can't touch this' which bought a smile to everyone's face at the party but it also has a mix of a Christina aguilera song.....links to both Britney & Christina! :D --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
