The land shall not be sold in perpetuity, says the Lord, for the land is

agricultural workers of Central America. The civil wars of the last
decades had as one of their basic causes the inequitable distribution of
land. Today, the wars have ceased, but this fundamental inequity has not
been corrected. Indeed, in the decade of the 1990's, poor distribution
of land has been aggravated because of IMF and World Bank pressure on
governments to "liberalize" land policies and allow market forces to

Tacamiche, a lively community_until early this year_of 120 families,
settled on 50 acres in the middle of banana fields. In June 1994, as a
result of a long strike by the banana worker's union against Chiquita
Brands International (the latest incarnation of United Fruit), the
1,000-acre plantation of Tacamiche, along with three other large farms,
was abruptly and arbitrarily closed down. Chiquita alleged that the
lands were no longer fertile, but the real motive for the closure was to
