i went to 4/5 nights, skipping (of course) the raster-noton show - but i doubt i would have made it to sunday had i gone.. not really knowing what to expect from the architettura (caipirinha) show i was pleasantly surprised. it was uncomfortable sitting on the floor (especially through Alexandre St-Onge's set - wrong crowd, but i think that even an electroacoustic audience might have become irrate). by the time panacea hit the stage the pain from sitting on a hard floor for hours was becoming bearable. not familiar with his material, i was impressed with most of his set appreciating the restrained looping, his live approach and the energy he took from the crowd. he was followed by sound track, whom i had never heard of before. his set started very straight with a bass drum and hihat kickin so we headed outside to get our blood moving and used the opportunity to smoke. flyin' high we re-entered the room and were absorbed by sound track's twist on otherwise fairly straight techno. good stuff, great feel. was it just me? i'll be checking to see if i can find any of his material shortly - does anyone know of any releases? the mille plateaux night had higher expectations to meet up to. it was all good, my only comments being that i would have preferred if vladislav delay's set had not started things off. it was hard to focus on the more ambient material early in the night. also, sutekh (who bombed his laptop - too much controller info i think, he stood there in disbelief. it was pretty funny) didn't seem too pleased with his set. maybe that's just me.. some of his mutes and unmutes didn't seem to fall in place rhythmically, but overall it was smooth. the songs i recognized from pms (? :) stuck pretty close to, if not the same as, the album versions. i had been waiting for the next night for months.. thomas brinkmann was in montreal! his set was catered to a more energetic and dancy vibe, but he executed with mastery. from what i was hearing, it seemed to fit the description of soul center, although i can't be sure as i haven't really heard it. it was leaning more towards house and funk - tasteful though. he also crashed his setup - but recovered nicely. his more experimental moments included the alien-earth being voices - "let the method to the madness begin" - but over a different background, etc. unfortunately i had to take off sometime just before 3 and might have missed his return to stage. can anyone tell me if he did play another set and if he played different material? also did anyone notice what he was using? mainly interested in the two small panels closest to him. sunday, was kit clayton, pole and dakca. by this time i had picked up a cold and was totally burned out. hardly able to stand i stuck around to catch pole who was using a simple but effective setup (nord?, mixer, cpu, fx unit). he created a dub paradise constantly tweaking the sounds to perfection.. my mutek experience can't wait until next year bring it on.. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Yeah, I've been kicking myself in the butt for not going to the Raster-Noton night. I should've known better but to limit myself to three of the events. :) I've heard nothing but amazing things about that night. As for Mandell's, it really didn't do much for me. It was a little too... I dunno. I didn't like the fact he HAD to keep the beat there and modify the pitch to do a transition from one song to the next. Songs that had very little in common with each other. It really broke the mood up AFAIC. But he does write very good stuff. You have to admit, though, that it was a little strange hearing his happy hyper melodic stuff after Delay's amazing performance and Sutekh's gorgeous minimal techno material. All'n'all, none of the nights I attended were bad. But I would've preferred a little more physical comfort at Ex-Centris. I'm not sure I appreciate the Fellini theatre as a live stage. I felt like a sardine sitting on the floor like that for more than 5 hours. Sound was amazing, though. Next year, I'll go to more of the shows. Apparently, I won't have to wait until then. I already hear rumors of more similar shows in October, organized by the same people. But I didn't hear it from the horse's mouth, so... sqrrt -----Original Message----- From: Mark Fiorillo [mailto:mfiorillo@yahoo.com] Sent: Thursday, June 15, 2000 12:48 AM To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] thoughts on Mutek? The Raster-Noton night was very good. My favorite being Noto. Such finely crafted <insert your favorite music-defining buzzword here>. He's very good at... hmm... "managing paths of tension", if you get my drift. Hmm, probably not. Anyway, 'twas good. :)

I also was a bit disappointed with Jake Mandell's set. I don't know his material very well, but I had higher expectations. Vladislav Delay was magical.

Again, I completely agree with that too (both the sound and the ass endurance test that was the Fellini theatre). g. -- Guillaume Grenier - gollum@videotron.ca in space there is no north in space there is no south in space there is no east in space there is no west --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

People that organized Mutek also are involved with Montreal New Media Festival, which always has great music events also (more centered on audio/visual as it's a New Media Fest). Last year was Ritchie Hawtin, Locust, Scanner, Farmers Manual, Tomas Koner, and loads more. I think it runs for 2 weeks middle of October. As for Mutek. Had a great time. Good to see such good turnouts. Pole & Kit Clayton were my personal highlights. Also thought Vladislav what's his name was really excellent. Some woman from The Wire played an afternoon DJ set which was amazing for it's sheer scope of the amount of ground covered (with proper transition), from weird noise, to ambient, to Johnny Cash, to hip-hop, to funk, to electric jazz, back to noise, etc...
