"Intelligent" and "obsessed with boobies" aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Anyone been to a sci-fi convention? Or E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo)? PLENTY of intelligent people there. But I tell ya.. the only difference between a video game expo and a porn expo is that the former has more lights and monitors -- and this is coming from a guy who works for an entertainment software company. Just because this list is for "intelligent dance music" doesn't mean the list members are does it? It's a normal male reaction though, we think about sex every 30 seconds (so they say). i think it just fucking says something about us.. no matter how cliched alex's argument is, he is right. there has been more discussion about mira calix being 'sexy' or whatever on this list than there has been on the album. How many women listen to idm? Few. How many women WRITE idm music? Fewer. I think I could count them on my left hand. My point? Many of us here would like to find a woman who is heavily into this genre and loves it as dearly as us; loves it to the point where they would like to write it, and not only that, are signed! The fact that a woman like this is possible is wonderful, but attractive as well makes it a dream, and as such, subject of conversation. Yes this is from a male perspective when we should probably try to be a bit more unbiased, but guess what? We don't live in an unbiased world, and the genre that this list discusses is extremely male dominated. Until more women begin to discover this music, expect more of this attitude.

Is Aphex Twin's tank relevent? We still seem to talk about subjects as trivial as this. But they are related to idm music, however indirectly.

I haven't really seen Mira Calix, but if I might add two cents to this discussion: The single men quotient of IDM absolutely loves the idea of beautiful women making music. So it's fine to say something like "she's beautiful" if you're speaking as a single man (and it doesn't degenerate to vulgar, dirty talk). That's a compliment, I guess, however tired she might be of hearing it. However, if you're speaking as a music critic, her physical appearance shouldn't have anything to do with it. Talking about AFX's behavior seems okay: it has a direct connection to the mind of the man who makes the music, and from that we can garner more insight into his productions. Pointing out that a producer is a woman is relevant as well, because there are very few women producers in this genre, but her attractiveness and your non-partisan assessment of her music should be ideally separate. So: lust after her if you want, list members, and I'm not against a "Wow, attractive women in IDM?" comment from time to time, but hopefully her album's musical merits will be judged apart from this by each listener. Isn't this why the whole "anonymous techno producer" thing started?
