FYI, it's _Batztoutai with MATERIAL Gadgets: De-Composed Works 1985-86_.
and i second the recommendation for it. it's not yer typical Merzbow.
also interesting (while not necessarily this-listy) is Akita's collaboration
with Christoph Heeman, _Sleeper awakes on the edge of the abyss_. would
probably appeal to the darkambient fans out there.

I would second the recommendation of "1930" (Tzadik), but I think the best
place to start with Merzbow would be the "Batztoutai With Memorial Gadgets"
double CD on RRR (or the vinyl if you can find it)- it's really diverse in
terms of how the tracks sound and how they're put together, as apparently
many of the tracks consist of Masami cutting up and resplicing fairly
classic pieces of musique concrete, and so it avoids just being a single
huge monolithic wall of noise, which is what he tends to go for these days.
