Vote Robot is a canadian duo who produce a wonderful mix of glitchy melodic ambience, experimental electronica, and light touches of indie pop. Fans of early Oval/Microstoria, Jeremy Boyle, Robert Babciz, Tom Steinle, Novisad, etc should really enjoy the Vote Robot output. Vote Robot have a 15-track LP out on the Canadian Vegas label and a ?-track remix LP, called Versions, featuring mixes from Yacka Tundra, Climax Golden Twins, Nova Scotias, Will Simmons, Corvalis, Ralph Haxton, French Paddleboat, Dasbild, Joe Bloggs, and Vote Robot. Glad someone mentioned the French Paddleboat release because it is an excellent but little known treasure that was released last month. French Paddleboat is the guise of Scott August who is ½ of the excellent Vote Robot duo. The Conversions in Metric cd, on Canadian Scratch label, is the first French Paddleboat cd after two excellent cassette-only releases on the Granted Passage label. Anyway, the sound of the Conversions in Metric cd is an excellent mix of poppy electronica with just a touch of experimental glitchy electronics proding a nice Isan vs Oval sound. Recommended. I got mine at littlebrotherrecords.com (thanks to AltaVista). The packaging is great: old LP covers (I got a Hall/Oates record and something else) turned inside out with a grocery bag with print on it. You have to damage the bag to open the record, unless you're careful. I think Lance's review is pretty accurate on the Remix LP, but the regular LP seemed very cold and mechanical (Raster-esque) to me. Not that that's bad, but Oval, Tom, etc. are very warm and fuzzy and the Vote Robot LP is not. If you can live with the fact that there aren't really "songs" on the LP, more like sound collages that tend towards the glitchy and abstract, you'll be fine.
