You know I'm kind of the point of skimming IDM, because my yen for new records has become a lot less urgent than my yen for software and hardware, but thanks be to those that recommended Jake Mandell. "Parallel Processes" is the precise sort of crusty, quirky stuff that is the very definition of IDM. Some tracks are more than a little 'Autechre Tribute Band' but still seem aimed directly at the listener, where a lot of Autechre seems pretty tangentially aimed vis a vis human attention. I grabbed this along with "Neptune's Lair" by Drexciya, which seems to have gotten mixed reviews, but a schizophrenic two thumbs up from me. When I'm in a certain mood, I need moody music, and the new Drexciya fills the bill. Not so banging as some of their other stuff, but the first half of the record is a soundtrack for an imaginary underwater Western. kent williams -- kent@avalon.net --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I can't really seem to appreciate this Autechre-related kow-towing. As much as I appreciate Autechre and Gescom as influential producers in their genre, I do not like to see new musician's simply 'lumped' into this 'Ae new school' farce. Jake Mandell probably wouldn't appreciate this as much as Venga Boys wouldn't like to be appreciated as Boyz II Men Tribute. Lets think more about the value of the music as opposed to the comparisons. Err, I can't listen to the record and not think Autechre, both for the type of sounds employed, track structure, etc. I really like it, and I imagine I'll be putting the CD into heavier rotation than any recent autechre record. If poeple don't want people to mention th Ae-word with respect to their music, they should avoid sounding like them. Jake Mandell would probably acknowledge that Autechre's sound is an influence on him. Why wouldn't he? I acknowledge their influence on my stuff. Maybe I phrased it in a flippant way, but no reason to get your knickers in a twist. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Jake Mandell's self acknowledged "heroes" (The Wire 4/99): Autechre and Mouse On Mars. For those who don't "hear" the influences check out "Displacement Map" or "Mourning Mr. Dachine" off "The Placekick EP" for obvious AE inspiration and "Azoic Trap" off the same EP for MOM influence. I might have spoken too harshly about Mandell in a post a couple of days ago (not that anyone cares), but I actually enjoy some of his music, especially the new EP.
