Fans of ambient/electronic orchestral music should
check out Australian producer Ollie Olsen (Third Eye,
Max Q, No, Whirly World) on his new CD
'Emptiness'(PSY041) on his own Psy-Harmonics label.
Not ambient, but beat-less, messing with tunings in a
real microtonal way creating a dizzy, sea-sick kind of
feel on some tracks, but it's also quite meditative.
To those interested, I caught a Steve
Mallinder(ex-Cabaret Voltaire) DJ set here in
Melbourne last weekend. Spun mainly abstract
breakbeat, funk and hip-hop. He now resides in Perth,
Australia and runs Off World Sounds, which includes
his own releases, collaborations under the names Sassi
& Loco and the Ku-Ling Brothers. The label released a
compilation called 'Cooking With Gas' (featuring other
Perth based producers). To quote a recent interview in
Melbourne magazine TRM - of the labels direction, he
said 'I'm not into pure electronics, so it's getting
funkier - we're doing house releases and funk
releases. My musical influences are very black because
i grew up with soul. I make music to titilate, amuse
and confuse'. On the possibility of working with
Richard Kirk - 'we're trying to sort it out. We've been
offered lots of big live shows but we aren't a
'greatest hits' supper club act. New tracks are in the
process of being made, we'll move it along in the New
Year'. Wow!!!
