Fantomas is a project of Mike Patton's (of Mr. Bungle fame). I'd describe
it as cut and paste metal with ambient sections and even some psuedo
operatic moments. The album they have out is about 30 songs long (most
songs being in the 1 to 2 minute range), each track being a "page" with the
concept being that its the soundtrack to a comic book. Patton makes all
kinds of inhuman noises, manipulating his voice with a lot of effects, etc.
This band is certainly not for everyone, but they were incredible when I saw
them last. Not really any relation to IDM though. Kid 606 has recently
been signed on as a recording artist for Mike Patton's newly started Ipecac
label which Fantomas also releases on. CDNow seems to have sound clips for
all the tracks at
