Just received a three cdr set, nicely packaged by a certain idm list member, N Willscher/Zammuto. "An overstuffed jewel case" of audio-quirkiness. While his influences range from Squarepusher to Aphex to Oval, much of the sounds on here are amplified by some sort of computer generated twisted soundscape.. While we're on the topic of O/r's latest release on 12k, the product of these cdr's is more in line with O/r meets Pole (minus the dub). Imagine, if you will, "techno" with a focus on the technology of sound manipulation, and a unique ability to process digital bits and pieces into one unestablished area of electronics. CD1 bends, twists, and glitches its way deep into experimental confusion, while CD2 takes a logical step up from this area into a more refined "sound". CD3 contains music.. a collection of tiny quirks, guitar licks even, melting with an omnipresent static hiss and a few beats to line things up accordingly. While we're still trying to digest an ambient versus digital-trickery style of music, Solutiore Of Stareau keeps your brain energized with lots of minimal beats, sparse melodies, and the occasional vocal out take. I was lucky enough to get the N Willscher/Zammuto 3-cdr release last week and i have been mesmerized by it ever since. This is easily one of the top demo/cdr releases i've received this year tied with the Pimmon & Warmdesk/Pellerin demo releases. But my description of this release differs somewhat from that of Pietro's though... The first cdr of this N Willscher/Zammuto 3xcdr features his beautiful take on the Microstoria, Cathars, Dont Dolby, early-Oval, Tom Steinle-style of ambient-glitchery. Lush flowing melodies, drones & chimes over subtle/subdued pops, clicks skipping over 14 luscious tracks. Truly beautiful stuff. The second cdr of this N Willscher/Zammuto 3xcdr features 20 tracks all built from static, pops, clicks, run out grooves, & sound distortions that build to form rhythmic structures using nothing but these noises. A wonderful use of found sound very much in the style of Institut Fuer Feinmotorik, SND, Motor, Surge, and even some of the more sparse/ rhythmic Farmers Manual tracks. Superb! The third cdr of this N Willscher/Zammuto 3xcdr is the most diverse of the three featuring tracks that range from ambient guitar with oval-esque pops & clicks to melodic microstoria-like ambient tracks to scanneresque treated vocal tracks to acoustic jazzy d&b and even a few up tempo sampled guitar tracks that have a surgeon-style to them. the varied sound of this cd ranges from rafael toral to to dylan group to jaguar and even surgeon but all with a very creative, albeit experimental, use of guitar. breathtaking! The name/producer N Willscher/Zammuto was totally unfamiliar to me before hearing this release. But after hearing this i am in awe and asking myself why some label hasnt snapped this guy up. If you're into experimental music along the lines of Microstoria, Dont Dolby, Institut Feur Feinmotorik, Motor, Rafeal Toral then this N Willscher/Zammuto is a producer you should familiarize yourself with. A strong second on this. I was also a recipient of this package and the only reason I haven't posted on it previously is that I have too much stuff to absorb right now to be able to comment intelligently. In fact, I've not gotten past the atmospheric and deep haze of cd1 yet. i'll chime in although i've only gotten this triple set tuesday & have only throughly listened to disc 3, which is perhaps the most accessible. the _sound_ of this cd-r is fantastic: minimal (in layering & timbre, but definitely not in structure), hissy, but not crunchy. it's all very calm & soothing. what i've been most impressed with is how the beats were all some sort of really subdued, muffed, elusive drum n bass, the sort of which i've never heard before. you almost have to make it out yourself. this thing also features one of the nicer packaging i've seen recently -- pleasingly cryptic, also. another great thing is that it doesn't sound like mr. zammuto is trying to school you or impress you with his abstractdom -- the music is quite abstract but at the same time, the process makes enough sense that you can enjoy it even if you're not into hardcore abstract stuff. plus, the programming itself is ace. all in all, this is excellent. i'll say more when i listen to it throughly, but well, this thing is definitely worth talking about so why not start the ball now. -- david

I would like to second (I think we're up to fifth or sixth now actually) the high marks given to the 3-CDR set by N Zammuto. There's a lot to digest here, but it's all very well done. Disc 1 is a 70 minutes of flowing ambient soundscape that has a highly Oval-ic quality to it, with multiple semi-rhythmic interruptions of sound which never really upset the flow of the work. It's really subtle and quite impressive. Disc 2 is an hour's worth of rhythmic static and hiss, Pan Sonic without the hum, with some quieter Pole moments thrown in. It's quite minimal, and there are many very tasty chunks contained within. Disc 3 is a wide variety of things, with quiet breakbeats, otherworldly squeaks and pops, interesting vocal samples, and a wide range of tempo and organic and electronic instrumentation, all sewn together in a real heaphone-friendly quilt. It's very engaging and surprising, a lot of fun to listen to. I would like to be the first to disagree with all the positive comments regarding SOS... but I can't, because the music is too damn strong. I would say that these 3 discs demand a very long attention span, but close listening will be rewarded due to N Zammuto's obsessive attention to detail (the cover of dozens of tic-tac-toe games may clue you in to his sonic aesthetic). This guy is all about details, and fortunately, he knows what sounds good. I'd never heard of Mr. Zammuto and, frankly, I get lots of CD-Rs that never should have left their creators' studio, so I had reason to be skeptical. But SOS is a serious force to be reckoned with. What a pleasant surprise his triple CD is.
