I just bought Global Goon's second album (the one with the girl on the cover) after hearing good things about it on this list. After a few listens, I'm left underwhelmed...seems like something Boards of Canada could do ten times better. is this just a weaker album than other GG works? does it grow on you after repeated exposure? -- ::::: Darren Keast ::::: Editor ::::: Skinny Intertainment Network ::::: http://www.skinny.com/

my feelings after the initial listen were very similar, after repeated listens the charm of the album started to make itself clear to me. you're just not used to it at first because his style is different from most. if you are looking for technical virtuosity this is not the album for you. if you are open to cute & simple idm , whose melodies might stick in your head, give this one a few more listens.

some of his finest are on the album with the reindeer on the cover. that album sounds like it was recorded later, even though it was released first. -roy Join 18 million Eudora users by signing up for a free Eudora Web-Mail account at http://www.eudoramail.com

i bought this album about a year ago & only really liked the first half. some of the songs are down right annoying. some of them, however, are all bubbly & soothing -- i usually skipped to those, which did grow on me after a few listens. then again, i lent it to my ex a while ago & i haven't heard it since, & i'm not really missing it. i doubt there's much of a change in style in his other album. -- david

The album with the reindeer on the cover/label has to be the best thing rephlex has put out in years... if you have the means, I strongly suggest you pick one up.

I have to second the idea. I think it was very entertaining release. Its like a slightly beefed up version of the music you would possible hear from one of those mobile that hang above baby cribs. Jason

In the spirit of my one-person quest for content in idm reviews, I have to strongly urge everyone to LISTEN to this before picking it up. I personally found it horribly cheesy and mostly uninteresting. The harmonies and emotional content don't come within a light year of Boards of Canada or the best of Gescom/Autechre to main but two. In my opinion that is. Peter. P.S. I know there's not a great deal of content in this commentary, but a) having listened to a friend's copy (a couple of times) and tried to like it, I decided not to purchase it, so I can't comment any more in depth, and b) my point here is just to give non-Global-Goon-aware readers a different opinion of his work, so they don't just go "someone said it's cool, I'll pick this up." -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au Raven: experimental electronic http://www.fourplay.com.au/sound.html "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.
