I've just been trawling through some of my older compilations and wow, hardcore breakbeat is sounding incredible to me right now! Anyone else getting back into that not-quite-rave, not-quite-jungle hardcore on early Suburban Base, Moving Shadow and Reinforced? Great compilations, too: History of Hardcore 1&2, History of Our World 1&2, Drum & Bass Selection 1-5 (or so). Part of the fascination has been as a soundtrack for Simon Reynolds' Generation Ecstasy. Not that I agree with half of what Reynolds says (or more specifically, how he says it), but I'm beginning to understand his obsession with early hardcore. Thoughts? Additional listening suggestions? .John. NP: V/A-History of Our World, Part 1

A number of favorite titles in my record collection are from the early breakbeat/hardcore era including labels like Chill, Kickin' and Moving Shadow. I will include some artist info (doing it from memory). Moving Shadow. A number of the Moving Shadow titles were definitely way ahead of their time with a mixture of great breaks, storming builds and (especially on the MS label) those trademark krazy accelerated voice samples. Various artists on MS include: 2 Bad Mice, Blame, Cosmo & Dibs, Kaotic Chemistry, DJ Trax, Mashed, Mixrace, Tonedef. Chill. If you want to go further back to the roots of acid/breakbeat/hardcore try to find records put out on the Chill label ca. 1991. Various artists on Chill include: Dr. Caligari, NRG (had a slew of anthems including The Real Hardcore, The Terminator), Return of the Living Acid, Rotor. Pitched up a little bit you can find the same sort of pleasure in these records to this day. Early Chill output (TUV001 - TUV020) has an early hardcore acid sound which is stylistically different than the later Chill releases (>TUV020) which one record I can think by Incubus - The Siren is about 200 bpm+ rumbling and screaming fast acid. Not the kind of stuff you listen to every day. Kickin'. Kickin' put out a number of records called "Six Packs", 3/3 tracks, that are interesting. One of them I have has a <horrible> sped up Fleetwood Mac sample but from what I remember the rest of the records content redeems itself. Various artists on Kickin' included: The Scientist, The Messiah (whose 'There is No Law' - rap edit is a great track) and many others I can't think of right now. Jeffrey.

One of my buddies here in Iowa City is a D&B DJ, so what I hear is skewed by the stuff he's buying. But it seems to me that a lot of the new D&B stuff is less inventive rhythmically than the old stuff. In particular the early moving shadow and dego stuff seems to be willing to really go hectic on the breaks in a way that the more modern stuff wont. In that respect, people like squarepusher are almost throwbacks in that they'll go nuts cutting up beats -- the mainstream D&B guys seem to really like a straight 2step beat and wobbly bassline. The jump-up and techstep stuff works as dance music but is less successful as listening music. In my own tracks, the DJ's always say "yeah, like that old school break." when it's not 'old school' at all -- I just like to mix things up on the beats, something that's out of fashion these days. [snip] i think a number of those rave tracks were way underrated. i still listen to a number of those old 12"s. sure, they didn't age well, because we identify them with PLUR business and glo-sticks and pacifiers (ugh), but musically, some of them are alright. and hey - some of our current idm frontrunners had rave hits. :) that being said, anyone who doesn't want any of their rave cd's/records, send 'em to me! * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com ##:# and when you're dancing and laughing/and finally living hear my voice in your head and think of me kindly
