Most of it is not music as such, but a sort of sampler of their radical sound design tendencies run amok. I don't have a MD player, so I can't say that's a definitive opinion, but I wasn't tempted to go out and buy a MD just to hear it.

It's basically a collage of strange sound bites, loops and sonic weirdness. Those people who stick it in their deck, press play and sit back are missing the point. The idea is to play around with it -- play it in shuffle mode, program your own seamless sequence, loop between edit marks or entire tracks, go exploring, etc. It's pretty much been designed as an interactive experience rather than a passive one. Worth buying an MD deck for? Perhaps not, but it's probably the only commercial MD release that really takes advantage of an MD player's capabilities. Autechre fans who have an MD player should snap it up though -- it's an essential addition to anyone's IDM collection. /\/)ark http://www.sonance.demon.co.uk/

I already had a MD player, so I didn't have to justify the purchase of one to get this. :-) I can't say that I listen to it often - it's not the kind of thing I put on while doing the dishes, for instance. But I think it's an interesting piece of work, particularly on random in a dark room. I've heard others say they don't like being jolted out of one snippet and into another - but I find that to be part of the fun. If I didn't already have a MD player, I probably wouldn't go out and buy one for this release. But it's definitely somethign I'm glad I have in my collection. Listening to it on random play as intended makes a big difference, I think. You begin to recognise elements of the same song split throughout the sequence, and the really harsh bits don't last too long... I've also heard a CD-R of it and that was much less enjoyable. adam

What Kent said. I do own Minidisc equipment, but I don't often get the urge to throw this on much -- it's sporadically interesting noises and little structure. I've got Mouse on Mars' "Instrümentals" and "Glam" dumped to MD and when I'm in the mood for wacky sound collage I'm much more likely to reach for those... -d.w.

That way you get a different mix everytime. </snip> over & out....jand ================================================================= "It's Dark there - in the Future, I mean. I bought the original MD and then turned it into an 88 track cdr. Working on getting a little program that buffers the cd (either to ram or the hd) and plays it back, so that the cdr can be heard in perfect non-interrupted random play mode. If this program ever becomes a reality i'll be sure to pass it on. Regards, John P.S. Wonders if there is already such a thing out in the ether?
