I love the urban sounds site, and I love people who put up Real Audio tracks to give us all an idea of what something sounds like. And *in theory*, the RealAudio radio show/DJ mix is a great idea. But is it just me, but does anyone else here find most RealAudio unlistenable due to the crappy sound quality? IDM is all about the details and nuances of sound itself, not just about a repetitive beat or interesting lyrics. While Alanis Morisette at 11k/8bit/mono with ultra-compression might not be any noticably worse than the album ;), to listen to that kind of RealAudio of Autechre in anything but ISDN quality or better is to rob the music of a great deal of its value. And I'm not even an audiophile. Honestly, I detest audiophilia. I have a T1 at my office, and I'm often frustrated when the only RealAudio available to me is 28k crap. My request to RealAudio publishers (provided they can afford the bandwith/server space) is to provide super-high quality versions of everything they post for those of us with high bandwidth access. Yes, I'm spoiled with the T1 at the office and an ISDN at home, but so are many many other people. Drives me totally flacking mad - I keep getting "buffering _x_seconds due to net congestion" then another short burst of crappy sound, then another "buffering" gap - - - grrrr. I *

dunno... if you've got half decent speakers on yr kit (what, no external speakers? come on...) it doesn't sound half bad (the JBL's we've got here sound superb for only $150... kicker and all...). 95% of us still have dial-up connections for 'leisure' use of the internet... No streaming 44.1K/16-bit AIFF/WAV just yet. New realudio specs (5.0) are getting there as far as reasonable facsimile of 'actual' quality goes. For a demonstration; http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket/audio.html . There's also the problem of server space (how many of you have more than 10 megs of web space?) We've fit around 435 minutes of audio into the same space only 50 minutes of MP3 would take up (or 5 minutes of stereo CD-quality). Quantity over quality I 'spose... -Våt. ----------------------------------- Reckankreuzungs Klankewerkzeuge Limited PO BOX 382864 Cambridge, MA 02238-2864 USA is on line @ http://www.tiac.net/users/sheket ------------------------------------------------

Try www.betalounge.com I was listening to it at a friend's house cause he's got cable modem, and the quality is great, for realaudio anyways. They encode their realaudio at 40k/sec. Lots of live sets like Kid Koala, Coldcut, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, and loads others. Makes me want to get cable modem, but its not available in my area yet :( AtL-5 ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
