I just wanted to say that the only real complaint I have about Autechre's latest is all of the "interludes" - two or three minutes of digital manipulation that often shows up at the beginning or end of tracks. Almost without exception, I find I'm just waiting for these bits to pass, and get back to the "track proper". This isn't a blanket dismissal of this kind of sound processing, it's just that what Autechre are doing reminds me of the results I've found by downloading a copy of Cool Edit or Goldwave and applying change after change after change, pretty much randomly. One word: metasynth. Those 'interludes' have metasynth written all over them. I like the runaway processing, but you're right, IMHO it's nothing more than layering filter over filter over filter...but hey that's the joy of metasynth! peace Nate On Wed, 14 Oct 1998, Michael Upton wrote:

i think you are indeed missing something about the sound then, because really it is not that easy to make the patterns (while very nonrhythmical at times) of static that ae does. i can usually detect method in their madness.. however at the same time i am not into the beatless noise manipulation for 100% of a track, such as i get the impression of for farmer's manual. the purpose of this for ae is to bring a beat / track out of the mess;; that is the reward..

Have you seen metasynth? Being a PC user, I didn't spot it straight away, but I think it's pretty damn likely. For anyone who's been making music utitlising the amount of production/composition nous Autechre have for as long they have, it would be very simple. Anyway, my comment about it sounding like buggering about with sound editing software was really a criticism of how soulless or distant (not in a good way :) I think these moments are. it sounds | the purpose of this for ae is to bring a beat / track out of the | mess;; that is the reward.. But they stick "the mess" at the end of some tracks... Anyway, I'm heading into rant mode. It's just a tiny peeve about an album I enjoy a lot more than I was expecting to, having very much disliked 'Chiastic Slide', 'Cichli Suite', and pretty much anything else post 'Tri Repetae'. And if anyone misreads that as "I wish they were still doing stuff like 'Tri Repetae'" I'll shoot them. :) Michael np. Don't forget Envane! That ep is probably my favorite of Ae's.... personally Chiastic isn't the best release, but there are amazingly badass songs... Cipater is damn near a masterpiece of music, as is Cichli. heh, on another note, I found out Ae is remixing Skinny Puppy. Can't wait to hear that one.... -Mark
