so, on an entirely different topic.... i have like, a billion questions on creating electronic music. for the past year i'd say in my spare time (which isn't that often) i've played around with some music software - learned a few things but would really like to get a little more serious about creating some decent idm. is there or does anyone know of a mailing list devoted to such a thing? or is idm a good place to start asking away? i'm taking a class next semister at college entitled "electronic/computer music" but given the amount of stuff i learned from my college's graphics classes, i doubt i'll learn a thing. also, any "amature" musicians in the tri-state area? looking to meet up w/ some people in the area maybe toss some ideas around , learn some new things. thanks Keith Reinert | ICQ# 4485538 | keith@iamlost.com <http://www.iamlost.com/keith> | pgp dss public key avail.

there's a moving parts mailinglist on here somewhere, someone I'm sure will point you to the address.

actually, I thought the same thing when I took the "Intro to electronic/computer music" at my school, but I actually learned a hell of a lot.. Though we were only allowed to use GM sounds and some sounds made by the instructor (which one of them I loved..:) and of course, you can always make some cool things with juno106 and have the knob data put in so that the sound you made is configured at the start of the track. Even though the majority of sounds available were lame, that was one of the best classes I've ever taken. You about the history of electronic music, as in synthesizers.. and unlike what you may think, they are electronica/idm/techno friendly (at least my teacher was).. and notable to say that he also fell in love with Aphex Twin's Flim track :) .auddplte <-- pacman/colongib (some GREAT stuff here) __ __\ \ / /_\ \ 1cQ<->uIN \_____/ 1.3777993 "..in whatever you do, if you can't break new ground, what's the point?" - James Cameron

nate harrison and i have talked about starting one ... and jay vaugh (teklab and mailing list guru) was interested in setting it up .. but he's been incredibly busy lately ... im cc'ing this to him to give him a slight reminder .... my idea for a list like this would be to have an ftp site set up to upload mp3's and do critiques and what not and also a place to discuss gear/working procedures etc etc etc m.

You'll probably learn about midi, which will be useful. Truthfully, though, if you've any propensity for computers you can understand most of what midi is all about in five minutes or less. techno.ca (I think) has a movable-parts list dedicated to this sort of stuff. The most valuable lists (imo) are gear specific, unfortunately. You could probably also learn a lot just by hanging out on the #midi channel on the irc for a couple of nights. bbn

there are several lists which you might consider. a few that i subscribe to are Analogue Heaven (analogue synths, recording, etc. and the eternal Prog Rockers vs. Ravers flame war), Digital Hell (digital synths, recording, etc. and the eternal PC vs. Mac flame war), and Electronica (which has almost no traffic these days). all are excellent resources for information and opinions on the creation of electronic music. be warned that there is a bit of resent towards "newbies" on one of those lists (not to mention any *cough*Analogue*cough* names or anything). but if you watch the threads for a couple of weeks and check the archives before asking questions, you'll get a feel for the list pretty quickly. the following URL contains several links to sites w/ useful information. near the bottom of the page, you will find info on subscribing to the lists i've mentioned as well as a few others. http://pages.pomona.edu/~jmaxwell/faq.html if you have any questions you'd like to ask, i'd be more than willing to give a try at answering them as well.

if one of those tri-states is NY, then yes. i'm in the Albany, NY area and am always interested in meeting new ppl who are doing something interesting w/ electronics. ./josh http://www.headcleaner.com/ ..well, i tend to neglect this site a bit http://synths.headcleaner.com/ ..the synthesizer picture archive http://members.global2000.net/~static/ ..wtf?! my obligatory homepage

the last time i hung out on #midi (at least on Efnet), there wasn't much in the way of education going on. maybe it's changed, but i doubt it. ;) ./josh http://www.headcleaner.com/ ..well, i tend to neglect this site a bit http://synths.headcleaner.com/ ..the synthesizer picture archive http://members.global2000.net/~static/ ..wtf?! my obligatory homepage

I took this class a few years back w/ the aparently unintentional course # of MUS 303. We basically used decade-plus old equipment to make our tracks. All we had in the studio to work with was a mini-moog, yamaha dx-7, a mic, some basic fx processor, 4track and 2 track reel-to-reel decks... all connected via a ghetto-style patch bay. At first I was really disappointed with what we had to work with to make our projects... it was old skool for sure. no midi. tape loops the old fashioned way: cut & splice the tape and hang it on mic stands and whatnot to keep it snug while looping through the reel to reel deck. As I look back on it, i'm so glad we used only these elements to make our music. that grassroots approach was pretty refreshing. musique concréte techniques galore. oh yeah. our prof was a huge phillip glass fan so I played him the aphex and phillip glass orchestration of icct hedral. He preferred the aphex version ;) Andrew larsonaj@muohio.edu "GamePrg." <aeq@access.digex.net> wrote:
