How does the Alec Empire/Panacea single compare to the rest of Panacea's output? I just heard it on the radio, and it really blew away most of the techstep I've heard (well, it had much more going on than Torque anyway). On this same show I heard the Coldcut Paid in Full remix—is this still in print? Where? They also played some Paperclip people. How does this compare to "typical" Detroit stuff? I'm really interested in getting an good sampling of Detroit stuff. This may be an impossible question, but are there one or two CD releases which are a good starting point for Craig, Saunderson, May, Atkins, et al.? How is The Innovator? Thanks Sam

It's on the 'Colors' soundtrack, which is in print according to cdnow. There's a version with Rakim's rap removed called 'Not Paid Enough' on Coldcut's 'What's That Noise?' which I'm pretty sure is out of print.

All the good sampler starting points are out of print, unfortunately. Look for 'RetroTechno/DetroitDefinitive' on Network and for 'Relics' on Transmat/Buzz just in case, though. I haven't heard it but people generally recommend the 'True People' comp on React as well. Planet E's 'Intergalactic Beats' is one of the best techno compilations ever (better than 'Artificial Intelligence' IMO) but it's got tracks by the Black Dog, Kirk DeGiorgio, Stefan Robbers etc in addition to Carl Craig, Kenny Larkin etc. Another very good Detroit-inflected comp is 'The Deepest Shade of Techno' on SSR. Carl Craig's got some solid singles collections out: 'Elements,' credited to Psyche/BFC, 'The Secret Tapes of Dr Eich' credited to Paperclip People, and 'The Sound of Music' credited to 6 9. The first two are on Planet E, the last is on R&S. Start with 'Elements.' For Atkins, check out Model 500: 'Classics' on R&S. For Saunderson, there's a double CD out that looks to be fairly complete but I don't really dig a lot of what I've heard from him, so I haven't picked it up. You should also look for the 'Depth Charge 1' comp on Submerge, and the Axis Records compilation 'The Other Day,' and absolutely pick up 'The Quest' by Drexciya (one of my votes for album of the year).

'Innovator' is brilliant and a must-have for everyone on this list. If I were starting a collection today, I'd buy these first, in order (excluding the two out-of-print ones which I'd buy on sight): 1. Derrick May: Innovator 2. Various: Intergalactic Beats 3. Drexciya: The Quest 4. Psyche/BFC: Elements C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org) "Sex is the darndest nougat murder, something something e-mail something something la la la la beable beable trousers and dingaling nougat..."

Holy shit! Here I was thinking that I'd never own this friggin' track, but I already *have* it - I bought the Colours soundtrack on vinyl from a delete bin *years* ago and haven't even looked at it in ages. God DAMN, I'm a happy camper. Greg

That's Carl Craig's "House" guise (really more like "Housier"), so it's not necessarily "typical" Detroit.

As a sampler, "Beyond the Third Wave" on Astralwerks and "True People" are good compilations of Detroit Stuff. "Transmat: Relics" is also a good one, but it's out of print. I'd also check out the Submerge Web site, as they have a few compilations out available through them that are worth checking out ("Origins of a Sound", the 3 "Depth Charge" comps, the Drexciya double, etc.)

Buy Carl's "Psyche/BFC - Elements 89/90" compilation on CD. It's awesome. I've heard there's a Kevin Saunderson retrospective either out or in the works. Try to find the "Model 500 - Classics" for Juan. Derrick May's "Innovator" is absolutely essential, IMHO. Some of the Detroit purists have noted that some things were trimmed or cut off/edited so as to fit the quasi-mix concept, but I look at it this way, it'll just make you want to search out the original 12"ers. Also, "Innovator" contains the track "Nude Photo", which started it all ... and at the 2:30 mark or so, a keyboard line comes in which is the most beautiful thing you've ever heard. Literally makes me shiver and brings a tear to me eye every time ... and how many records can you say *that* about? In the more recent vein, I've recently picked up Stacey Pullen's Kosmic Messenger album and Claude Young's "Soft Thru", both on Elypsia. I like them both quite a bit, Claude's in particular slides easily between the "Detroit" and "IDM"/Trance territories. I also liked Sean Deason's "Heaven" album (recorded under his "Freq" guise) quite a bit, too. In short, though, you should probably clip the last half of your post and send it to 313@Hyperreal.ORG if you really want loads of replies :-) - Greg
