I asked a friendly and knowledgable record store clerk for something harsher and noisier than Public Energy last weekend. He knew that I liked Generation Star Wars and Chiastic Slide so he hands me this Merzbow cd (Ae, Panasonic, etc. remixes) to listen to on some headphones. Yikes! I'm still trying to recover from that one. WAY too harsh. I think Generation Star Wars reaches near the limit of my harsh tastes and I especially like how Alec balances the harshness with beautiful ambient moments. I also prefer Speedy J's harshly sampled crunchy beats to Alec's TR-808, but I think I'm being too picky. Any suggestions? Well, I've only heard Generation Star Wars once (and only pieces that time) but The Destroyer basically rips its head off and guts it and shoves its entrails down the gaping hole in its neck, so... that might not be what you're looking for. Hmm... How could you _not_ love that Ae remix of Merzbow? Fucking excellent. But anyways, the rest of the disc is pretty harsh (which I love, but I do own two non remixed Merzbow discs). I'm thinking Scorn, specifically Logghi Barogghi. If you do not know much about Scorn, he/they have one of the biggest cult followings I've ever encountered (and been glad to call myself a member)... LB is the "beats" scorn album; wickedly distorted, harsh beats presented in a very laid back, dubby style with the occasional lilting, offtempo melody. "Out Of" is sublimely beautiful and haunting, in particular. Other albums do not fit this tag so much, but if you like LB, you'll probably like all of them from Evanescence forward (Ellipsis, which has remixes by Autechre, Bill Laswell, and many others is my favorite one; you might want it for the Ae connection so even if you hate it you haven't wasted your cash. =) Logghi Barogghi is excellent, Gyral is much more ambient, although similar to LB, Zander is HUGE bass, and the Leave it Out 12" (if you can find it, count yourself lucky because it went out of print) is the single best scorn recording in existence. Hopefully it will be reissued on CD later this year... And if you get into buying Mick Harris output... hehe... well, you're wallet will not appreciate it. Can't say I've heard Public Energy #1, but I'm a huge Ae fan... and personally, I didn't think Chiastic slide was that "harsh." But my definitions are probably a little different than yours. =)
