Gotta agree with Franz about Animals on Wheels. I really like a lot of Andy's stuff. I think the first track on Spunk Jazz (Hate Me?) is fantastic, really loud and nasty break and at the same time really funky. A lot of the album on Ninja Tune is really great too, the mellow "soluble ducks" in particular. I don't what anyone who is so much into Mu-ziq can have against Andy Coleman's stuff frankly. He puts out a lot of stuff that's a helluva lot better than Mealtime was too. His track on that was great, as are a few others, but on the whole one couldn't have a greater pack of generic "let's see how many offensive clicky sounding beats we can fit into each bar" music. I *love* clever, crazy, changeable drum'n'bass, I *love* Mu-ziq/Squarepusher etc and to be honest I like Mealtime a lot more than I did on first listen too, but still... Andy has a great melodic ability, much like Mikey P, but with less chessiness on the whole, which I consider a good thing. He has a great sense of humour, like Mike P again, and comes up with some great rhythms sometimes. Occasionally can do some quite offensive sounding stuff with insistent ostinato patterns that drive me crazy which I skip every time, but then so does Mike P/Mu-ziq and Aphex and Tom Jenkinson. Anyone into the Mu-ziq/Squarepusher/Plug/Dot label/etc style of idm ought to give his stuff a listen, honestly. No worse than much of the other stuff, sometimes quite a bit better. There, that's my rant. Stopping now, you can come out of hiding! np: John Zorn - Circle Maker -- Peter Hollo raven@cia.com.au http://www.cia.com.au/raven/ FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.cia.com.au/raven/fourplay.html "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.

Just wanted to quickly mention how much I'm enjoying the new Animals On Wheels album, "Nuvol Icadira". Gone are the drill'n'bass edges from earlier A.O.W. work. Instead, he's produced a really playful record full of groovy electronic rhythms and melodies that aren't too far removed from some of the classic IDM y'all know and love. I'll definately be giving this one a glowing review in the next issue of Grooves. Oh yeah - the release date is November 9th via Ninja Tune. Greg

<< I never heard much on this list about Animals on Wheels' Nuvo I Cadira. What did people think? >> I think it's an absolute brilliant album, despite the fact that it's a complete 180 from Designs & Mistakes. It's much tighter, groovier, makes much more sense. I'm amazed at the low profile that this guy kept now that he has two solid releases behind him. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Dont forget the excellent Modular Existence ep that preceded the Nuvol I Cadira album. Also his Andrew Coleman: Blame It On Adam 12" on Thrill Jockey was a nice ep of quiet subdued electronica. btw: for more AOW info + mp3s, check out their official website at: http://www.animalsonwheels.co.uk/ Also on whe AOW page is the official Bovinyl webpage on which the announcement of Bovinyl's return was recently made!
