wow. trent showing up on idm list again. interesting. i've also read interviews where trent trashed on the whole techno scene...BUT, pretty much everything he said was true. There IS a tremendous amount of trash techno out there, but at the same time, this list is devoted (i thought) to finding and sharing info about techno artists who were doing something interesting that involved more than just tired old techo cliche's. Much props to trent for being able to distinguish good from bad. perhaps that was $.03? _________________________________________________ Brian Rachielles- UC Santa Barbara (.b) Production Director KCSB fm 91.9 1997-98 Audio Program thurs 2-4am ambient-idm-noise web- http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/4980

with all this talk of trent reznor & nothing, i'll give my two cents. i only have a problem with him releasing people like plug & mbm because i've read countless interviews with him saying that the techno/rave scene is stupid, a "genre built around one song." he says aphex would be the exception... i don't think that someone who says has the right to turn around and A) borrow the style (perfect drug), B) have really good artists of said genre do remixing (orb, spacetime contiuum, plug, mbm), and C) release really good records from said genres built around the same song. it's really hypocritical, and should be offensive to anyone who really takes idm to heart. that being said, i must say i do like trent reznor's music. i just think if he's going to be involved so much in this genre, he should get his opinions straight. but techno in general *is* hugely derivative. in fact i blame DJ culture for the whole mess. truth is, DJs like records that all sound the same. makes it easier to mix. so if you're going to clubs and you're hearing these DJs, and then you get inspired to do your own record, of course you're going to make it sound mostly like all the other ones.

there is a ton of boring, unoriginal music coming out in the techno arena. however, i think we can all agree that meat beat and plug stand head and shoulders above the rest. i have no problem with dissing techno (in general) but still liking the one or two particular things that are obviously inspired. -- Jon Drukman jsd@gamespot.com SpotMedia Communications ...I was an infinitely hot and dense dot...
