two incredible disks ... my history with both men (justin broadrick of techno animal and mick harris of scorn) has led me down and interesting path .. one that could be thought of a a maturing process ... i was aware of both of them in high school/junior high when i was throughly entrenched in the loud fast angry music of deathmetal/dark punk stuff ... at the same time i was also beginning to enjoy some of the older industrial records back catalogue stuff (throbbing gristle and especially cabaret voltaire .. whose members i still follow religiously)... to me both genres (old school industrial and speed/death meatl/ whatever) had very similar musical bases ... the use of nosie to create atmosphere .. well the scorn project and the techno animal stuff has taken both mr. harris and mr. broadrick one step closer to completing the loop ... the techno animal 2cd set grows on me more every time i listen to (and i bought it right when it came out) ... it actually fits better into my current playlist (occupied territories by muslim guaze ... all the vibert stuff ... and alot of the subharmonic label stuff (which justin broadrick did some work for under the name final) ... he has taken his completly ambient/noise side (which is visible on the final albums in its unadualterated forms and is hinted at on most of the godflesh cd's.... usally on the last song) added some wonderfully filtered beats and instruments (which are constantly reminded me of old throbbing gristle and cabaret voltaire) and created 2 disks full of beautifully odd soundscapes ... that will get your head noddin' and your brain turnin' ... you will be amazed at how well this album will fit into your collection (if your want list is any mirror of what your current collection looks like) .. now the scorn ... mmm .. where to start ... gyral is the album where you can begin to see the current direction mick harris is following ... i just picked up zander (his latest) and it is basically some very distorted cut and paste beats (most around 80 bpm) and some of the most wicked low end noise you will ever here ... and thats it ... often people describe his latest work as minimal ... and i cant really think of a better word than that ... maybe low end minimal ... if you play it with a graphic equalizer rarely ever do any of the high end indictaors come on .. pretty cool stuff ... gyral however has hints of this ... but also has hints of what can best be described as too dark park era skinny puppy ... the beats in gebneral are generally less filtered and have a very clean crisp sound ... there are movie samples and voice samples sprinkled liberally through out the album ... and often many of the songs are built around .. *gasp* ... a central melody ... ok my fingers hurt ... hope this helps somewhat ... i would beyond a doubt recommend the techno animal ... and would also recommend gyral (but i would maybe get ellipsis first ... the laswell remix is worth the price of the album alone) good luck annwn
