Just recieved a promo copy of Speedy J 'Shocking Hobby' album on Novamute. On first impressions, maybe a little one dimensional, but subsequent listens reveal a real depth. Relentless stuff for the most part, with exceedingly high gain levels running on half-time electro/ hip hop breaks, Jochem's paranoid landscapes become more lush as the album progresses, track 9 'sabina seat' providing one of the few similarities to his recent output on Fax. And sorry to revisit an old thread, but what's the general opinion on Jake Mandell's 'Quandom Current'? Yet to pick it up, just seeing reactions after a month in everyone's headspace... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Mandell's QC full length is four on the floor techno, not IDM, so that's a change from what many might expect. But it's *damn* good, excellent in fact, imo. It's not *like* Vogel, Landstrumm, et al, but it has that sort of inventiveness to it. If you like Mandell's IDM, you'll likely like his techno that he exhibits here. Plus Stewart Walker gave him so tips on doing techno, so maybe that'll help you make up your mind! :) Andrew Duke :) Matthew Tudor wrote:

on first listen, i wasn't impressed--but that was in my truck with a MASSIVE sub. however, at home, where the bass is a bit more attenuated (and less susceptible to awful resonances), i found it to be a quite good techno album. IDM it's NOT. good it IS. ks At 09:33 2/24/00 -0800, William Samuels wrote:

I'm going to disagree with all those who said it wasn't IDM. Although there are 4 on th floor rythms throughout, jake maintains his sense of dissonant melody and syncopation.
