Hi folks, I've been doing an idm/ambient radio show for about two years now on a local, non-commercial radio station and soon I'll be on a second station. I've got a question for all you radio dj's (there are a few on this list) and listeners of radio shows. Do you like the tracks mixed together or do you prefer hearing a human voice now and again ? My one program is called _link_ (it's short for something stupid) and I select my tracks based on links between them (producers, labels, remixed by, ...). I prefer to do a 1-hour show non-stop, mix it all together, but I can understand that for the sake of listeners I should mention what tracks I've played. What do you guys/girls think ? The one luxury that I have is that I do not need to play stupid commercials ! The one luxury that I do not have is that I have to buy all the stuff I want to play myself, I'm not getting paid (it's a hobby) so at times it's really difficult to keep up with new releases. Some of you sometimes offer promo's and I'm very grateful that I can lay my hands on these (tape, cd, whatever) just to keep parts of my bank account intact. If anyone has some promo tapes or stuff that they want to send to me, please mail me off this list. If the stuff is fit for my show, I'll play it and give credit where it is due (I played a track of EMP, thanks Kent, my review will follow when time permits me). dv8 (who's girlfriend's birthday is next saturday - there goes a fair bit of money to a very worthy cause !)

Or you could offer to send a playlist of each show by mail to people who request it (have the listener send in a self-addressed stamped envelope,) or even just post the playlist to a website, if there's one available. Another solution would be to suggest at the beginning of your set that listeners call you if they want to know what a particular song is. This would at least allow you to mix semi-continuous sets. You could back-announce every half hour or so, if you chose, but since a well-mixed set would blend songs fairly seamlessly, the songs would be hard to tell apart if you aren't already familiar with them. I do a show myself with a friend of mine (on Kiss FM Berlin - Radio Massive - Drum N' Bass) and try to give as much information as possible. Why not create two parts: 1. part: new records. Can be mixed but with information. 2. part: A mix with new and old material, and maybe an information on the tracks at the end. I mean it is important to inform the people listening. Hope that helps, Thaddi, un flaneur electronique http://www.phreak.co.uk/haywire/dhr/sonicsubjunkies.html

We tried ther playlist thing. It doesn't work that good. Either people forget the stamp, or they don't write at all, requiring information immediately, while listening. I often meet people in recods shops the day after the show with a list of the new tunes we played, asking for them at the counter. Call-Ins are horrible. You can't concentrate on both! I used to rely on call-ins for my radio show back in college (many moons ago) but I wasn't beatmatching, so I usually had 3 or 4 minutes of spare time between transitions. I see your point. By the way, last week on my radio show I played the Boards of Canada track from Diskono[x] and I'm sure it'll appear again sometime. I'm doing a show on FBi radio in Sydney, which is campaigning for a full-time license but at the moment it's on air for 6 weeks (5 weeks left). My show is called Eclecticity and is basically a broad range of idm-type music and related stuff. "Experimental and underground electronic music" is the tag-line. If anyone's in Sydney, it's on Wednesday nights from 11pm-2am on FBi, 96.9-FM. Give it a listen and let me know whether it's truly awful or not! ObIDM: Got the Carpet Bomb comp "Highways Over Gardens" the other day and it is totally "Da Bomb". Brilliant! The second-last track goes for about 22 minutes, mad ever-changing drum'n'bass (of the not-too-annoying-drill'n'bass variety... I like it!) The beats are mostly drum'n'bass in that they're fast and complex, and the music often recalls Tortoise kind of stuff. Very interesting, very cool. Peter. np: Uri Caine/Gustav Mahler - Primal Light/Urlicht. Though not idm (it's klezmer/Jewish/jazz versions of Mahler's music, utterly brilliant, sensitive, beautiful...) it does have DJ Olive from We doing turntables. -- Peter Hollo raven@fourplay.com.au http://www.fourplay.com.au/me.html FourPlay - Eclectic Electric String Quartet http://www.fourplay.com.au "Of course, dance music can be a music where you lie on your back and your brain cells dance" -Michael Karoli of Can, quoted in Wire mag.
