Have any of you tried to optimize an MP3 file? Since I have become such a huge fan of MP3 downloads lately I've found a whole bunch of music I'm sure I could never find elsewhere (Big thanks to the IDM list for this). The problem I'm having however is that the fidelity isn't very good. No true high notes and no deep bass notes. I would really like to bring these files into Cool Edit and get them sounding better. I've tried this already with Mini-Discs with limited success, but I wonder if any of you out there have any other methods? Also since I'm no musician I don't know if it's actually *possible*. As a designer I could say maybe it's like trying to optimize a gif or a jpg. It's already compressed so there isn't much you can do to make it look better without rebuilding it. Is the same true with music? I usually add lots of reverb and ring modulation in soundforge. Of course, I usually add so much that the original source is lost in a sea of thundering echo and sinewaves, but I'm usually satisfied with my results. Hope that helps! .Bil. Damn! You guys put more work into music you download than I do into the crap I release! Maybe that's why I release "crap." :P But seriously- if you're serious about sound quality then I'd say either don't use MP3s or use ones with really high bitrates (200+), because otherwise you're bound to hear artifacts and lose his and lows. -- :: atomly :: atomly@atomly.com | atomly@atdot.org | atomly@cyrus.net http://www.atomly.com | http://www.mp3.com/atomly [CELL|(888)522.3830] | [CELL|(701)729.1631] | [HOME|(651)748.8676] --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

There is an MP3 player plug in by Arboretum systems http://www.arboretum.com (creators of Hyperprism, Raygun & Ionizer) called "Realizer". Right now I think its only for SoundJam (Mac) or WinAmp (PC) but it can REALLY beef up thin sounding mp3s with a lil tweaking. Here is the marketing blurb from the webpage: "Unlike conventional equalizers and bass/treble controls, Realizer actually adds missing frequencies and synthesizes new harmonics to recreate the sizzling realism of the original recording. Arboretum Realizer combines proprietary Bass Maximizer, Harmonic Exciter and Stereo Enhancement algorithms - the same processes found in Arboretum's professional Hyperprism products - in a simple-to-use interface designed for personal music enjoyment. Realizer is completely user-configurable and includes a number of factory settings designed to bring the most out of each musical style." This isnt snake-oil fakeware, it REALLY does make many mp3s sound better, especially electronic music of any kind - and its a FREE download! ernie Ernesto Ikerd, (817) 763-4795 Company Graphics, Dept 17, MZ-4202 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Fort Worth, Texas --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I bought a WowThing (TM) from SRS Labs for use at home ( http://www.wowthing.com ) It's a little blue box with a few knobs that sits between your sound card and your computer speakers. As near as I can tell, it's a little one-chip DSP device that does some sonic brightening and 3D spatializing on whatever signal you feed into it. It was ~$30, but it makes a _dramatic_ difference, even with cheapo computer speakers. Unlike the plugins, it has the advantage of improving _all_ the audio from your computer (not just MP3's played through specific software), and it works for those of us/you using something besides Windows. I bought it as a lark, but found it significantly impressive to recommend it to several friends. -d.w. Ernesto Ikerd wrote:

okay. the first thing to do, of course, is convert the mp3 back to wav format. if you have soundforge or any other sound manipulating software, then you should do a little noise reduction if there is noise - usually no more than -10db if there is not much noise, otherwise, your fidelity will be shit. if there's a lot of noise, then you would use say -20db of noise reduction. then, to improve the fidelity, equalize it. if you want better highs and lows there is an option to do that in soundforge without having to manually adjust it. just go to EQ - graphic - and then see your options to increase/decrease hi's mid's low's, etc.. then when you're done, convert it back to mp3. at least 128 kbps and perhaps resample it to 44.1khz or higher if you're not going to burn it to cd. this is probably the most general method of improving the sound quality of most downloaded mp3s. however, it all depends on what it sounds like to begin with. i usually do this series of adjustments to the mp3s i download and they sound much better. later joseph fitzpatrick -----Original Message----- From: Shimone <shimone@pnbc.net> To: idm@hyperreal.org <idm@hyperreal.org> Date: Thursday, February 10, 2000 4:30 PM Subject: (idm) MP3 Optimization

ah yes. but what about those MP3's downloaded from the web which normally are encoded at 128kbps? those are the ones really worth optimizing. free music online? what a bargain! shimone atomly wrote:
