Before I go any further, I thought I'd point out to everybody that, as of today, I am now 8,763 days old, and that Jon D gets bonus consistency points for rising to the bait of the troll I left in my last message to IDM (bonus points to any of _you_ who figure out what the bait was). the freshmaker == GMerchan@gnn.com (Gonzi Merchan (Fresh)) freshmaker> freshmaker> Has anyone heard anything about a domestic Pearl's Girl freshmaker> single? I've been putting off getting it... Geez, don't be so cheap! The Logic 2xCD version of the singles cost me like $10 or something, and that was at the chronically overpriced Virgin Megastore in San Francisco (did you know that Virgin has a limousine motorcycle service in London, as well as their own charter hot-air balloon service? I didn't...). mkultra == Mark Kolmar <mkolmar@xnet.com> mkultra> mkultra> Was "Born Slippy" simply reissued as it was, or with new versions? Since Lazlo didn't post the listing for the two CDs and their corresponding three 12"s, here goes (courtesy of the freshly-renovated Underworld page at <http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~tremblay/main.html>): born slippy .NUXX, 1996. 2 x CD- BMG Logic 7432139599-2 3 x 12inch- BMG Logic 7432139599-1 12inch- JBO 44 CD5- JBO44 CDS1 1. born slippy .NUXX 11.37 2. born slippy .NUXX DEEP PAN 9.59 3. born slippy .NUXX DARREN PRICE MIX 6.31 4. born slippy .NUXX DARREN PRICE REMIX 8.08 CD5- JBO44 CDS2 1. born slippy .NUXX [short] 4.24 2. dark + long [DARK TRAIN] 10.23 3. banstyle [ALEX REECE MIX] 5.39 I _never_ say anything at all if I can't say anything nice (nope. not me), but if I _were_ that kind of opinionated bastard, I might mention the fact that the Darren Price remixes struck me as yawnfests and that I really don't understand Alex Reece's popularity, because his remix did nothing for me either (in much the same way that I thought his remix of Model 500 was, well, pathetic). Because I'm a nice guy, I'll merely content myself with being puzzled by the fact that they've included a several year-old remix in the form of "Dark Train". Hmm... mkultra> What's this about a "Dark & Long" CD? The original release mkultra> was 1 CD and 2 12" singles, with little overlap among them, mkultra> and very extended mixes on the 12"s. Well, others have posted the track listing of the Pingo / April records version, so I won't, but I will say that the versions on the 2x12" and this CD kick the living snot out of the ones on the original Junior Boys' Own CD single. _Especially_ "Spoon Deep," which is just about my favorite deep techno song ever. mkultra> Still searching for the "Mmm Skyscraper I Love You" single -- mkultra> I will gladly take this off your hands if you want to part mkultra> with it. You're funny. gmv == .GMV500 <videla@ucsu.Colorado.EDU> gmv> gmv> Hey gmv> while all of you are arguing over Rephlex releases, or whether or gmv> not the latest Black Dog album is good/not, I will sit at home gmv> enjoying the recent release from INTERLOPER. I haven't seen anyone gmv> mention this CD/vinyl/whatever, so I will pass on the gmv> suggestion. Ooo... goody! I _love_ the "Daddy Vegas" EP, which is pretty much prototypical IDM, as far as I'm concerned. Even despite the fact that it's on an unfashionable label like Plink Plonk. I'll have to track this down. I never was able to find a copy of _Space Cowboys_, which hacked me off, because when I finally got around to buying the first Plink Plonk compilation I loved that as well. TEEX did those guys a huge disfavor by including the tracks they did on TEEX 2. That turned me off to Plink Plonk for years. gmv> Unfortunately as I always say, I am horrible at reviews. I will gmv> say that this CD has the magnitude of something like BRAIN PILOT, gmv> CHERRY BOMB, SNESURREAL, E.V.A, etc. Those are also artists I hear gmv> very little of, which is a shame. You're not the only one. While I personally can't stand Sensurreal or Brain Pilot, I _love_ Cherry Bomb. Not long after I shelled out $800 bucks (OK, maybe it was only $23 -- but that's still TOO DAMN MUCH) for Cherry Bomb's _Electronics For Dogs_ at the Virgin Megastore I found the SAME DAMN CD for $2 a pop at the local Tower Outlet. I bought all the ones I could find and gave them away as party favors. It's a shame that more people didn't buy this record, because Richard Brown is very gifted at making straightforward, eclectic dancefloor music that works well for listening. Loads of electro and tasty Hannant-esque textures (which is, of course, no coincidence). Which reminds me -- do any of you trainspotterati know anything about a label called Phuture Communications? I got a white-label of PHUCOMM 1 about six months ago, and it's a fun, cheesy IDM-style breakbeat record that sounds like nothing so much as the light-hearted, whimsical high-speed breakbeat Caustic Window tracks (as opposed to the bloody, thuggish Caustic Window stuff, which is just as nice). gmv> I am pretty ignorant about a lot of this music so I look to the gmv> list for it, but many of you argue (rather than discuss) about gmv> Rephlex, WARP, Awerks, not other labels that could use the help gmv> this day in time. Hear, hear! Not that RePHLeX and Warp don't crank out loads of quality tunes and all, but shit, y'all sure do love to microanalyze them a lot. _I've_ merely given up hope that the scope of discussion on this group will ever appreciably broaden, but, like Per, I can't quite bring myself to press the 'unsvbscribe' button. I've been on this silly list for close to three years now. You can all flame me now. gmv> BTW, the title of the disc is called AUGER and it is on the PLINK PLONK gmv> label ( in have never heard ANY person mention them on the IDM list gmv> before, though I could be wrong) the artist's name is Johm Ryman. Like I said, I'll pick this up. rns == Ryan N Schreyer <schreyer@plains.nodak.edu> rns> Question again: "Limited Edition Aphex Twin Classics on Couloured rns> vinyl" Why was only one record coloured? The first one is a lovely rns> powder blue, but the second record is just plain black. Euch! Bit rns> of a letdown, that, after seeing the first one. At least the music rns> kicks! I hate to break it to you, but you got screwed. _Both_ records in my copy are a cool, minty blue. Of course, they date from the period when R&S seemed hell-bent on filling the vinyl more full than it was supposed to be, so all of the mixes sound slightly overcompressed and muddy, but at least I have all those great tracks off the "Xylem Tube" EP on vinyl. Hours of scrating fun! (The _worst_ release in the "Over-Plentiful R&S Pressing" category is The Source Experience's _Different Journeys_ -- sure, there are over 81 minutes of Robert Leiner greatness on the records, but the compression they were forced to use to cram all of that music onto two pieces of vinyl take a lot of the color out of the fairly subtle music. Contrast this with the Advent's _Elements of Life_, which spares not on the heavy virgin vinyl and spreads itself over FOUR records. Kudos to Internal and the Advent for caring about how their music sounds. Of course, then they blew it by putting bonus tracks on the CD version, but shit, we can't all be perfect.) dj == David Jones <djones@jfku.jfku.edu> ^^^^ JFK University? Weird... dj> And here I thought that Plink Plonk had done the ole' belly-up move dj> on us! Good to here it's still running. And one reason that they dj> may not get much talk is that they seem to have a terrible dj> distribution... I have a _horribly_ difficult time finding Plink Plonk here in the Bay Area. I've found the Interloper EP and that's _it_. I found Stacy Pullen's "Death March / Flash" EP up in Portland, and of course after that it started popping up everywhere in SF, but I've never even _seen_ any other new PP vinyl in the city. Then again, I tend to be flipping through the bins at nausea-inducing speed and their logo _is_ printed awfully teeny, so maybe I'm missing them all. miles == Miles Egan <cullen@rahul.net> miles> miles> Speaking of IDM breakthroughs into mainstream media, SF's miles> "underground" dance scene and DJs are the front cover story of miles> this weeks SF Bay Guardian (THE free SF weekly). Two pages of miles> DJ interviews are followed by full-page stories on Jonah Sharp miles> and the Hardkiss bros. (duck, Jon!) Are any of the companies miles> that make rave hats and baggy pants publically held yet? *tortured whimper* Oh MAN did these articles suck. Not only did they have to cleverly work in the tired and puke-inducing "'digerati'" angle again (sometimes I just want to smite those cute and lovable boys and girls at Suck upside the head), but the DJs they featured are, in the parlance, "manky". Why couldn't they have mentioned Joe Rice, Jon Santos, Franklin Shotwell, or any of the other DJs in San Francisco who are actually true to the soul of underground dance music and have talent? Oh, wait, I answered my own question... Articles like this one are why allowing dance music out into the real world is generally such an unmitigated disaster. Boring middle-class white people think of dance music as being "funky" and shit, and articles like this one play to those expectations. There's more to dance music than the Jackson Five, honey-chiles... keep it strong, keep it underground, ozyamandias . . . the self-reflecting image of a narcotized mind . . . ozymandias G desiderata ogd@organic.com Desperate, Deathless (415)278-5674 http://www.organic.com/Staff/ogd/ ::AOAIOXXYSZ::
