Oh, hell, nobody offered any words of advice, criticism, consolation, or
even flame-ology. So I bought the damn thing.
Talking to myself then. First sign of madness! The Return of the ... stop!
And here's the rev:
It's excellent, if this is your style.
Not typical idm. This is only fringely thislisty. So, let's expand our
horizons. Just go past that sign that says "Here abide monsters". Come
on, be a sport. When was the last time you fell off the edge of the
world? Let's recreate sentimental journeys of our wasted collective
youth. It's like that Russian joke - The sign says "Gentlemen", but just
ignore that and go right in.
Back to the track on the rack:
More down and dirty, but the intelligence is there, slinking slyly and
stealthily skulking beneath the rude and gritty surface. Jazz and
trip-hop. All instrumental, though the usual off-the-ceiling Coldcut vocal
samplemania reigns supreme. You'll be typing and tapping to the beatz.
ASCII never had it so good. Smooth.
Also - could it be? - what sounds like live non-electronic instrumentation
layers noodling and doodling atop the skip hop razzamatazz. Sax, flute,
whatever. Some of those drum rhythms surely sound human, but perhaps the
boys just humanized their androids with some wacked filter effects.
Those who enjoyed the jazzier and dubbier cuts on the Coldcutskis' Journeys
by DJ collection should not be disappointed.
Other related tones and bones:
D.J. Food (also the Coldcutters)
Those jamming Ntone/Ninja comps
The Abstrakt comps on Shadow
"If you can't stand the beatz..."
Acid Jazz comps (though this is sans vocals)
Funki Porcini
Give it a spin.
Are these gents trying to outprolific Sir Laswell?
Don't forget the free Laswell and friends Axiom bop in Central Park this week.
Thankfully, not a rap in site. Rapper's delight. Never had it right.
I ain't no joke.
I used to let the mic' smoke.
Now I slam it to the floor and -
oh, sorry. Wrong list. Wrong vibe. Wrong decade. Wrong record.
Do you like sc-sc-scratchin'? DJ's the man we love the most.
Best,
