The Beloved: "Your Love Takes Me Higher" excellent song, hard to believe it came from the Beloved Also, there was a house band a couple years ago called "Brothers and Systems" that had a really, really excellent 12" single for a song that totally sucked on the LP. In fact, the whole album sucked but this single was great. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of the song anymore but it definitely fits into the "closet IDM" idea. Anyone else know the song I'm referring to? Also, most New Order singles have at least one great remix, even if you don't count the latest import remix album. Even the original mix of Perfect Kiss has a lot going on that only repeated listenings will bring out. Of course Skinny Puppy has scatterings of dark IDM all through their works. Grab ye olde copies of "Bites" or "Remission" if you don't believe me. Later, -H-

_Happiness_ was an okay LP but for some great summery, Med grooves check out _Blissed Out_. The ten minute remix of _Your Love Take me Higher_ is one of the best remixes ever of a tune. Five minutes of insane beats and orgasmic vocals and then a five minute breakdown with an impossible number of strings all scrambling on top of each other. The hundred other remixes of Beloved tracks on there are also pretty good, _The Sun Rising_ and my personal instrumental fave, _Pablo_ particularly.

Well further to the debate of what is/is not IDM, I want to throw this spanner in the works and risk enormous flaming and credibility loss by listing some of those tracks that for some reason or other I like, but most of us would be too embarassed to admit. Most of the tracks below possess one or more of the following characteristics. some characteristics of "closet IDM" "negative" 1. was far too popular or over-rated 2. was not popular but by a very popular/commercial artist 3. is too cheesy/gimmicky or has lyrics 4. your parents like it 6. you liked it when you were young "positive" 7. has excellent production 8. well written/good song structure 9. remixed, engineered or produced by someone with credibility 10. has its heart in the right place 11. you can relate to your non-idm fanatic friends through it because they like it too (crowd pleaser) -------------------------------- The List (not terribly complete) -------------------------------- Kraftwerk - The Model, Neon Lights, Pocket Calculator Donna Summer/Georgio Moroder - I Feel Love Georgio Moroder - The Chase Art of Noise - Moments in Love most Eurhythmics Visage - Fade to Grey New Order - Blue Monday Yello - Oh Yeah, Sweet Thunder Paul Hardcastle - Rainforest Cameo - Word Up Michael Jackson - Billie Jean Julee Cruise - Rock Back Inside My Heart (Tibetan Dub MIx) Madonna - Justify My Love (yes really - listen again) Public Image Ltd - The Order of Death Beatmasters - Midnight Girl Stone Roses - Fools Gold Pop Will Eat Itself - PWEIzation, Psychosexual Bjork - (anything that Graham Massey produced) Inner City - Big Fun, Good Life Orbital - Belfast/Wasted (new mix with vocal) The Orb - Star 6&789 (phase 2 remix) Humanoid - Cry Baby that should do for now any comments, additions, glaring omissions, rare b-sides welcome. peace, Andrew dachut@syds01.isc.gov.au

Some find their absurdist humor overbearing and can't deal with it. For a wild ride in a big space ship with a big clown nose on the front, check out _'80-'85: The New Mix in One Go_ for a start. I can recommend anything they recorded before '85 with few reservations. Their sound has become very suave and debonaire since then, but arranged and recorded extraordinarily well. Proceed with caution.

Great groove. It's also taken wholesale from Public Enemy's "Security of the First World". So add PE to the list.

The drum loop of which was in its turn taken from James Brown's "Funky Drummer". My humble suggestions: Human League - Being Boiled Suicide - Suicide (LP) Miles Davis - Bitches Brew (LP; my dad likes it, so that makes it fit to one of the categories! ;) ERkki everybody's talkin' trerra@uta.fi

My $0.02 : Donald Fagen ! His album "The nightfly" has to be the perfect chill-out/relaxing music when you come home after a long night partying, IMHO. It's sooooo groovy. Otto "The keyword is survival on the new frontier"

YES!! How about `The Dignity of Labour' EP?? Loads of wibbly noises and arpeggios out of a Roland System100... really interesting stuff.
quoted 1 line Suicide - Suicide (LP)> Suicide - Suicide (LP)
Now this is an LP I haven't listened to in a long time - take a listen to `suicide' by Spacemen 3 on the `playing with fire' LP for a real trance-type `rock' track. Two notes, ten+ minutes... Fantastic! How about (for more ambient-type thingys): AR Kane - `69' (LP) some of the best chill-out music *ever* john.. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- | e-mail: jat@ohm.york.ac.uk | | web pages start here: http://www.york.ac.uk/~jat5/ | -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- * my music: http://www.york.ac.uk/~jat5/html/music.html * *********************************************************
